Is it bad to become friends with my friends girlfriend?

What if I've misunderstood their relationship? When I hang out with the guy I sometimes see him talking on the phone with someone the way you'd talk to your girlfriend, so I assumed it's her. And when we were out in a camping event, there were like 50 people there, I saw them lying next to each other on the ground, seeing these I feel like they are in a relationship.
Also how do you suggest I tell this to him? Like do I fully open up about how I need close friendship with her, or what?
