Can heartbreak cause depression?

My ex badly messed me up over a year ago and I dealt with the depression since last summer. I began to start feeling normal again 6 months ago, but sometimes it comes in waves. I will see things of him on social media and literally, it will put me in a bad mood and depressive state for 2 weeks.

I believe that it can certainly trigger a depressive bout, that’s for sure! But depression is a caused my a neurotransmitter imbalance, namely serotonin. Heartbreak, while easily making you sad cannot cause an imbalance in chemical neurotransmitters.
