What does "it's complicated" mean to you?

You are single, you are dating, you are in a committed relationship, you are in a relationship that's breaking up, you're married, you're divorced. . . but "it's complicated?" Does that mean you have no idea whether your partner agrees that you are in a relationship, you are playing that silly break-up/make-up game and you can't be honest about what's happening with your partner, you're too embarrassed to explain what kind of a mess you've created, or something else? Have you ever referred to your status as "it's complicated?" If so, what does it mean for you?

I think it's when both people don't agree about the relationship they have, but at the same time aren't willing to break it off. Like say the guy says it's casual, the woman wants more, but they haven't gotten to the point of breaking up, complicated. Woman wants to be independent, but stays married because she can't afford it, complicated.
I mean, you could also mix the word up with retarded, as generally when "it's complicated" one or both people in the relationship are temporarily, or for an extended period of time. I can say so with confidence as that retardation has afflicted me before.

For me,

it was difficulties with my own self and getting it to fit- with someone who didn’t understand and wouldn’t get *why I felt and believed what I had* on my level. Because my struggle wasn’t theirs.

For the most part, it was a life lesson/ milestone I had to cover, that was hindering progress in the relationship.

-Do they wait for me? Or don’t?

I wasn’t even sure myself, if I’d ever surpass it… and if they were even the type to want to try to help walk me through it.

So I will say:

use this as a form of manipulation and means of

opportunity (the most dates possible.. simultaneously).

And then there are those, who actually mean it and can’t see past their own short comings and/or

doubts, and don’t think/feel that their s. o. should “necessarily wait” for them and/or have to deal with that (waiting/ or trying to help them overcome it and surpass it).

I’ve never used this term. I don’t bother to be in relationships that aren’t able to be clearly defined. Most of the people I see using this are confused or drama addicted people who either have issues getting along, or where one person wants commitment and the other one doesn’t and they’re trying to figure something out.

If anyone know me quite well they would describe my relationship as just that "complicated".

When I first changed my status as to it's complicated was when my husband kicked me and our children out of the house because I had the nerve to be angry at him for gambling $9,000 out of $10,000 saved to pay our house taxes... The audacity of me (RIGHT?) to express my discontent, my disappointment and not wanting to lay with him...

Its complicated usually means the scale of content has been flipped or knocked over and there is no sure path yet in sight of how to fix it or how to walk away. The relationship is in a limbo land. Whether it will be demolished and cleared away or undergo renovations is yet to be decided.

For me it was away of expressing my pain and also stating I am not available. I am not interested in dating nor I'm I searching... I'm trying to heal.

It pretty much means yes they are in a relationship but open to meeting someone else , basically opening doors for someone else to come in and sweep them off their feet , I see girl’s use this on their profiles when they are ready to cheat on their boyfriends or husbands , if you are in a relationship with someone that uses this on their profile , you are best to just dump them , they aren’t worth your time , kick them to the curb where they belong

Because kids are involved it makes things complicated. Both people are tired of the way things are so they separate but still have feelings for each other and put kids in the mix that like mom and dad together or makes things complicated.. hard actually

Boils down to a lack of emotional clarity on the state of the relationship with the added complexity of our wealthy lifes... finances, houses, kids, etc.. It generally means, "work".

In one example I know it meant she couldn't get divorced so easily, the kids were traumatized because he was an addict. It worked out fine in time!
