Why did my boyfriends step-mum call me by his exs name?

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for about 4 months and I get on well with his dad and step-mum. A couple of days ago, she was talking to his dad in the next room and called me by my boyfriends ex’s name. She did it in the context of ‘oh that is X and X’s’. I’m sure she was mortified that she did it but they’ve not been together for 5 years. They were together for about 10 years so I understand that she would have been a large part of their family at some point. But do you not think it’s strange that she’d slip up after 5 years?

At first I tried to take it as a compliment that she’s feeling comfortable with me and has the same feelings she did when he was seeing his ex, but I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s kind of spooked me out.

Your boyfriend's step-mum simply made a mistake and had a slip of the tongue. Sometimes our brains can make associations that we're not even aware of, and it's possible that she was thinking about your boyfriend's ex in the context of the conversation and accidentally used her name when referring to you. It's also possible that she's used to associating your boyfriend with his ex and simply had a momentary lapse.

While it's understandable that the slip-up might have made you feel uncomfortable, it's important to remember that people make mistakes. It doesn't necessarily mean that she has any negative feelings towards you or your relationship with your boyfriend. If it continues to bother you, you could try talking to her about it and expressing how it made you feel.

Mixing names is in every parent’s DNA. If a parent (mine) can mix their children’s names or call one of us the wrong name after x plus years im pretty sure a boyfriend’s mother calling you his ex’s name is no big deal.
