My boyfriend of one year lied to me for the first time?

I was waiting in my car outside his house when he got off work (it was a surprise) and I seen him pull down the street, once he saw my car he turned down another street and drove away. I called and asked him why he did that and he said I was mistaken, it wasn't him... he said he was stopping at walmart and would be home soon. he came home with mouthwash but I could still smell the cigs on him (he supposedly quit smoking months ago) I asked him several times if he was lying about driving and he continued to look me in the eye and tell me I was being crazy. I finally called him out and told him I saw him I was 100% sure and I know he went to walmart to get something to cover up the smoke..

He has NEVER lied to me I'm almost sure of it. we've had such a trusting and open relationship. I don't know how to handle this I'm so incredibly hurt

Well it seems that you are really giving him a hard time with his smoking problem,this means you need to give him a break, I am not a smoker but this is a huge issue for them its diff. Not easy when you want to quit of something and you are not getting the right help and I say this because if he lie to you of this it's obiusly that his more concerned of you been mad at him and not really focused on him quitting, if you really love him help him day through day you will get more results than giving him some more to get stress out and you may push him away. ;-)

Well, luckily it was only about cigarettes. It's hard to quit smoking. Maybe you should be more supportive of his making an effort to quit. I don't see this as a deal breaker and I don't necessarily think you have to worry about him lying about other things. I understand that you are upset but it sounds more like he was afraid you'd get mad at him for smoking. Lighten up and try not to get down on him for occasionally smoking, be supportive and he'll eventually want to quit on his own.
