Do guys really have a "freak out" phase when they become distant if they feel a relationship might start?

So after doing a lot to win a girl over, I have heard that guys might go through a "freak out phase" or a phase when they act more distant than they have done before because they are partially afraid of loosing their freedom? Or some other sort of fear? Has anyone witnessed this type of behavior or have guys experienced it themselves?

How can you know if they are going through a freak out phase or if they are just not that interested anymore?

Can a guy be really interested one week and then kind of just lose interest a week later? Or does that usually NOT happen?

I know that as a girl, if I start liking a guy, it's often impossible to stop liking them immediately like that. But I am not so sure about guys...

I've done and still do it. To referance the joker it's like a dog chasing cars, once you catch one you have no idea what to do with it.

But I know I wouldn't do it if I liked the girl enough and hence this characteristic only shows itself if I don't feel for the girl that much. I can only speak for me there not sure how other guys take it. I basically don't freak out when I'm 100% sure.

So what do you end up doing during this confusion phase?

I know this guy, he chased me for an entire 1.5 months and then suddenly started being more "distant" with less attempts to hang out, less texting... but when I see him, he seems to be acting exactly the same...like nothing ever changed. Confuses me so much! And of course I let him know I am also interested (not with words but through action of course).

How long does this phase tend to last? And do you sometimes just back off completely?

I just back off to slow things down, give myself time to think and asses what I want and where I'm going from there. I think sometimes we chase never expecting the chase to come to an end. And when it does it catches us completely off guard and you don't know what to do with the girl you were chasing. I back off, ideally if the girl want To be honest if the girl wants something I can't offer her then I would back off, I'm not going to intentionally hurt somebody. Sometimes you can talk things

out, could be just a matter of someone not wanting to rush thing. Alternatively I could put the situation to one side for awhile and come back to it with a clearer mind. Your best bet is to talk to this guy and ask him what's going on
