If he only did it once and respected her answer, there shouldn't be a problem. If he kept doing it, then yes, that amounts to harassment. But it doesn't seem like that was the case here.
I don't think guys should ever pass notes like that or do any cold approach of asking a waitress/barista on a date. Not because it's wrong but because in this day and age it can get you persecuted. People don't even need a valid reason to call you a creep or perv, as long as you are male.
I'm seriously disturbed that so many guys said it wasn't right for the store to ban him. He's almost 40 and he asked a minor out. It's disgusting and perverted. Starbucks did the right thing
It's creepy and annoying as hell when guys irritate me when I'm working since I can't get away from it because I'm at work. They did the right thing. Especially after reading the note.
He's well over the age of being a grown ass man lol he should've known that wasn't right. Just bc you think a person is funny it doesn't mean it's an invite for a date
She wasn't "of age" and the note was creepy, but they still could have just asked him not to do it again (unless they already did and the story we're reading is incomplete).
@AleDeEurope The age of consent in Washington depends partially on the age difference between the two people. A 16 year old can be with a 17 year old. Not a 37 year old.
@samhradh_leannan "In Washington State, the age of consent for sex is 16 years old. At this age, a person can consent to sex with any adult, regardless of the age difference between them. Washington's age of consent laws apply to both heterosexual and homosexual conduct."
@AleDeEurope Sorry, but that's incorrect or oversimplified. "A person is guilty of sexual misconduct with a minor in the first degree when: (a) The person has, or knowingly causes another person under the age of eighteen to have, sexual intercourse with another person who is at least sixteen years old but less than eighteen years old and not married to the perpetrator, if the perpetrator is at least sixty months older than the victim..."
@AleDeEurope I mean, maybe I'm misunderstanding the legal jargon. But this is also what I found out years ago when I was actually trying to figure out whether or not it was legal for me to sleep with my first boyfriend. So unless things have changed, I think it's probably right. There IS conflicting information out there, though.
@samhradh_leannan Your source sounds pretty legit. Here in Illinois is 17, and you can date anyone older than 18 unless that person is someone of authority (I looked it up when I was 19 and my girlfriend 17), so I thought it was the same case in Washington.
I understand your opinion but this isn't about consent "The age of consent is the age at or above which a person is considered to have the legal capacity to consent to sexual activity".
@SLT93 No, having dinner in itself is not a sexual activity. But dating, while also not a sexual activity, is heading in that direction. It implies sexual attraction and an intention to potentially have sex at some point. So consent does begin to factor in.
@samhradh_leannan I'm glad you agree with me that dinner is not a sexual activity. However this article is not about dating. To quote the 37yo man "So I gave her a note to see if she'd be interested in dinner". There is no mention of dating so we possibly cannot comment on the man's future ambitions.
@SLT93 I think a date is pretty much implied. Just because he didn't use the word date, that doesn't really mean anything. He didn't give any other reason, so... I think it's implied. But perhaps they could have confirmed that with him prior to banning him.
@SLT93 No, I didn't assume that the dinner would lead to dating. I assumed that the dinner WAS a date. Because that's the most common reason why total strangers ask each other out to dinner. And since he didn't provide any other reason for wanting to have dinner with her, I think it was a pretty reasonable assumption to make. While it would perhaps have been thoughtful of them to try to determine his intentions prior to banning him, I think this particular assumption is well founded and I'm glad that they were on the safe side by choosing to ban him. If his reason for asking her to dinner was something other than a date, he should have given her the reason.
you can't ask people out on dates now? I've gone out on many dates with cashiers who ring me up. id sue them. these places know what they are doing. they hire young attractive women to bring people in. it comes with the territory.
He did nothing wrong. First, its perfectly legal. Second, he didn't pull his dick out and shoved it down her throat. He asked her out. She could have said no. End of story. Starbucks people are being assholes here
The employee’s thoughts are the only ones that matter... the decision should be up to her

it's borderline. i mean, the age of consent where i live, IS 16, but i don't know about Washington state. However, really, 37 and 16, it's more of a moral thing, i mean, come on, right?

She actual is of age to give consent.
I was going to say they went overboard until I saw the note.
Ha the note just been him politely asking her out and not about being inside her then I would say they definitely went too far banning him.
But yeah he's a weirdo.
He is 37! She is 16! OMG the age difference is too much! 😳
so what baby
@girlsshouldtryanal
I understand if he is in his 20s, but he is in his 30s! That is sick, and wrong! 😐
it's legal :))
how old are you?
@girlsshouldtryanal
I am 15, now shoo. Your 41. 😏
oh you're so young! are you a virgin?
@girlsshouldtryanal
Yes.
I am not lol. But I have never had sex with virgin girl
@girlsshouldtryanal
Good for you. 👏
lol I tried of loose vaginas , probably thats why I want either fuck a virgin girl or try anal sex with them. Look at my name
tired*
@girlsshouldtryanal That's a beautiful name girlsshouldtryanal. You must be really proud of it.
Starbucks had no right, if she really was of legal age. Doesn't make him any less of a loser though... And creepy. Yes.
16 isn't of legal age to date a 37 year old.
@samhradh_leannan 16 is the age of consent in Washington, therefore it is legal to date a 37 y/o.

@samhradh_leannan I guess my source was wrong then, I apologize for that. Thanks for clarifying :)

@samhradh_leannan You assume the dinner will lead to dating. Not always the case. Assuming only makes an Ass out of U and Me.

It depends...
She may have appeared to be of age, and may have also appeared to enjoy flirting with him.
If she asked him to stop and he continued to do so, banning him was the right thing to do.
If he simply offered dinner and she turned him down with little no no further interaction, then it sounds discriminatory

If the age gap is wide enough for the guy to pass as you're actual dad, the gap is way too big lmao
He did nothing wrong. First, its perfectly legal. Second, he didn't pull his dick out and shoved it down her throat. He asked her out. She could have said no. End of story. Starbucks people are being assholes here
Starbuck doesn´t want to become a pedophiles favorite place to be, I don´t blame them, I hope that guy end up in jail for some decades.
This guy must be playing stupid since police were involved. The guy is defending this by comparing it to someone being gay. Come on now.
It's freaking coffee! Who the hell can't get coffee at 3 million other places.
It was inappropriate. They did the right thing.
There is not an official age for romance😄
Most than half of the society thinks their is but there is not. 😃
And we should mind our own busines anyway😅😊

Not entirely. That sounds like something I would do back in the day but not now.
