My city isn't on the list but I doubt it is far from being on it either. Ever since our state government made the yellow blinking left arrow a thing many pedestrians have been killed while in crosswalks correctly following the traffic laws while motorists just drive through crosswalks like they had they right of way. It is now legal in my state for a motorist to actually be in an active cross walk or an occupied one that does not have lights. Where I come from that comes with a minimum $500 fine. But not here and that is part of the problem. They have placed the safety burden 100% on pedestrians and not at all on the drivers. In my neighborhood over a dozen pedestrians have been killed legally crossing the street in the last five years and only two of the motorists were charged as they killed the pedestrians "legally." As long as you didn't break any traffic laws while doing so, in my state it is legal to run down a pedestrian and kill one deliberately.

The City I live in is small and surrounded by other small Cities but I'm 20-30 Miles ( 45 minutes - hour South of Downtown Pittsburgh PA and this City is huge and quite a lot of traffic with buses and people walking up streets and people go so fast yes Pittsburgh PA is pretty dangerous

I live in the South and NO Southern city made the top 20 list!

@OlderAndWiser as they say everything is SLOWER down there. Even the motorized wheelchairs go 2 MPH.. your more likely to get hit by a fly, an armadillo, or an alligator than a car

There are other explanations but perhaps a stereotype is all that you can see.

@OlderAndWiser and hear.. isn't everything SLOWER.. Again Im a city boy.. born and raised. and I got zero fucks about it. Everyone tells me things are slower there. Even other lawyers in my groups Im in as well as paralegals, tells me the SOUTH is slower and more homely ish...

When they say slow, they are referring to the intense pressure that some people bring to all that they do, and those people seem to be in a rush to do everything. Yes, we seem to have less of that in the South (although cities like Atlanta are "progressive" and catching up with the Northern counterparts) but that doesn't mean that we all drive around town at 10 mph and speak at the speed of molasses.

@OlderAndWiser from what Im told by many and I can confirm this.. I95 from NYC to Fla has places where you need to drive slower than a snail.

1. I've driven that route many times and the only slow spots were caused by traffic congestion.

2. There are also many Northerners driving that route. We occasionally have Northerners visit Florida.
