Do you believe all opinions should be respected even the bad ones?

A lot of people seem to think that every opinion people state must be respected even bad ones like racist, sexist or others of that kind.

Do you think even those should be respected?

My motto here generally is yeah you are allowed by law to have your opinion but in no way am i required by law to respect it. and if its really abhorrent i also get to hate you for it too.

Have your reprehensible opinion but don't expect others to care about it.

Or to put it another way i respect your RIGHT to your opinion but i don't have to respect your actual opinion.

Why?

Simple that community is full with People looking for attention they do not really care about the actaul gay, lesbian and trans People.

No they Just want attention and have no respect for anyone that disagrees with them

And to be honest I live in the Netherlands the country that has been the most accepting of gay, lesbian and trans People for decades.

With the introduction of the LGBTQ community the hate for the actual gays, lesbians and trans has risen to the moon. Before that community the actual ones Just wanted to be accepted and treated the same as everyone else we were there.

With the introduction of that community trying to force and control. what People are allowed to say and think the actual ones are victims of People that started to hate them. thinking they were part of that community

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Whos to say that it shouldn't be respected simply because you dont agree with their opinion. Sure I may not agree with what other people say and I will debate them but that doesn't mean that their opinion isn't respected. Everyone is different and everyone has different opinions than everyone else. Thats what makes us human. If everybody thought the same then that would make us all robots. We should be happy that other people have different opinions, the world would be very boring if they didn't.

It depends. Bad opinions usually have a basis as to why those people perceive it that way. A lot of the times it's because of how they were raised and society.

Society used to encourage racism and sexism. And if you think about it, those generations whom experienced society that way, are still around and beliefs are hard to change. Those generations teach their younger generations the same beliefs.

Also people base their opinions on their own experiences in life. They don't know any different and becomes hard to see it a different way. So to me, I can understand why people have certain opinions and I always try to just give another perspective.

But on the flip side there are bad opinions where they are purposely being mean and insulting. Where they try to push their beliefs onto others. These I tend to have a hard time respecting because of their intentions. I don't like bullies in any aspect.

While I do think they all deserve respect I dont think it's really about that. It's more about not being so offended over what someone's opinion might be. Like if a person told me that they hated all red heads and even though I'm redhead and know that not all of us are bad. I wouldn't be offended or even try changing their opinion cause it's not worth it. I ain't gonna lose sleep over how someone else thinks.

I respect others RIGHT to have their opinion and state it... even when I don't agree with it. They have the right to assemble and protest all they want. Doesn't mean I have to agree or support them.

No matter how bad it is.

I think people cross the line when they move beyond just hating someone for their opinion and move into criminal status. Like when people do unlawful assemblies to counter protest and move into violence, throwing things, starting fights, etc...

The moment we start to silence people for their bad opinions, then it is just a matter of time before the powers that be get to decide what is bad opinions and what is not, and we are already in a way getting there, with people being punished for comments they stated decades or years ago.

Getting people fired from their jobs for something they said 20 years ago, just seems wrong... it is making people today not speak honestly and driving those with bad opinions into the silent underworld.

Don't know about others, but I'd rather have people not live in secret and fear. We'd have no way to know who actually supports bad ideas if we silence them all.

What is respect? Where is the opinion being told? What kind of system do we use to include the variety of opinions?

There are different kinds of systems of inclusion. Depending on the system, certain things are allowed and others are not. If we're in a therapeutic group, every opinion must be subjective. If you're in the Congress, we need technical information. A judge separates things between legal and illegal (being very simplistic). Each territory has it's own system, procedure of inclusion and procedure of exclusion. We have to look at the territory and see what it is considered respectful and what is not. After that, we decide what will be respected and how.

But in general, I don't like being aggressive. Why can't we be gentle, for God's sake.

An opinion is an opinion. Which means it's the way one sees the topic at hand.
You can disagree, but banning it from speech or from online boards such as these only demonstrates that after all, you're not all that different. You're only sitting on the bandwagon that is deeemed "right" at the moment.
Learn to deal with differing mindsets or you'll never amount to much in life.

What it comes down to, even peoples opinions that offend you, you are responsible for your own actions, verbal- physical, it doesn't matter, you're not responsible for theirs. Everyone has an opinion. Some people are more adamant in how they express those opinions than others. Unless someone is abusive to others they have the right to express their opinion. You have the right to either give yours or just disregard theirs altogether.

I think we should respect the person's right to have an opinion. There are many people on this app I debate with daily that inside I'm just debating the astronomically low odds of how the only two brain cells they own somehow collided and caused them to have a thought outside of remembering to breathe. I do have to respect they have a differing PoV than mine though.

Where people lose me is when their toxicity goes out to actively trying to harm others either by words or actions.

I believe they should be respected as long as the opinion themselves are respectful and well reasoned. Where respect and reasoning come amiss from the opinion, then they shouldn't be valued or respected.
Under ''respect'', comes the implicit condition that the opinion is not a gratuitous attack or invoking of violence on determinate groups of people or a single individual.

Because only if thats the case you can argue with them and engage in a conversation.

If they just mention something racist/... they have every right to do so, but you can't do anything else with this opinion, either agree or disagree with him.
