How can people feel pride in things they did not earn?

I used to play a video game called starcraft. In this game I would play 1 on 1 with another player. It's a war game you gather resources build and army and kill your opponent.

The matches can be long. Anywhere from 3 minutes to 2 hours though the average is probably around 20 minutes.

You can pause in this game. Sometimes a player has something happen in real life and they need to pause the game and step away from the keyboard.

99% of the time the other player waits patiently.

But 1% of the time you get these people who need to win and have that win on their game profile.

The 99% who don't pause, I think, want to have a good game. They want to play a game and learn and improve. In this competitive game of starcraft, it's all about improvement. It's all about getting better at the game.

People want a real game so that they can practice and improve. They don't unpause because to unpause and get a free win is actually a detriment to their goals, which is to improve.

But some people don't want to improve and to actually be good or be better than other players.

Some people just want to pretend like they are good and will do anything to get a free win.

I just wonder, how does that person feel any pride? I feel like they do. In some delusional way, they are very proud of the wins on their record despite not earning them.

It's just bizarre. Are they just trying to look good for the other players who might view their profile?

I feel like this behavior is how most people are in real life. I feel like a lot of people are just clout chasers. Chasing unearned self esteem and unearned pride.

That can't last.
