Think it's a 50/50 mix of people who are just grifters making money with books and YouTube clicks and people who are clueless that just believe it.

They just had the "final experiment" where some rich guy invited and payed for a flat earther and a flat earth debunker to take a trip down to Antarctica to witness the 24hour sun.

A 24hour sun debunks the flat earth model, and all the top name "flat earthers" refused the free trip. Which tells me they know what they are saying is BS so refused to go.

There did end up having 2 flat earthers go and he did witness and film the 24 hour sun, and at least one of them is no longer a flat earther so baby steps I guess

I'm thinking that most say it for the shock value. Pretty nutty stuff though. My friend's crazy girlfriend was into that for awhile.

Throughout history there have been people who were thought idiots but were proved right. The logic of flat earthers is if they side with the idiots then that actually makes them more intelligent and one day they'll be proved right.

The problem is throughout history 99.999% of idiots just get confirmed as idiots.

They “believe it” because they don’t trust the authorities telling them otherwise. Flat earthers don’t care about proof that the earth is round, they just don’t trust any authority that tells them otherwise. It’s the best real-world example of willful ignorance

Good analysis. Sounds like my friend's girlfriend. She has an anti-authority view on other things also. She has diabetes and went with some unconventional way of treating it only to end up with problems. All in the name of "not doing what those medical people say".
