How important is it for you to receive a Valentines Day gift from your SO?

... Okay. I saw a question being posted earlier today, like 16h... and the question went "Will my boyfriend didn't get me anything for valentines day. Just 3 days left..." La Di Da...

1) Does anyone else find it weird to be expecting a valentines gift BEFORE Valentines?

2) How important is that day to you and if you do anything that day, do you bring a present?

3) Do you EXPECT a gift from your significant other?

4) If you don't receive one, is that going to be a dealbreaker? End of the relationship?

5) If it is, why do you believe that showing affection is only done through the showering through gifts? Because that's what you do, if that wasn't the case, you wouldn't be really worried about receiving a gift on this day in the first place.

If I were in a relationship, I'd get her something, but that would be more often than just specific holidays or anniversary. I actually would prefer not to get anything.

No, if I were in a relationship, I wouldn't want a present at all on any occasion. She could get me something randomly I need something and she knows it, but I don't want something out of sheer obligations.

Valentine's Day is for new foolish lustful love. I have been married 23 years and been together for 30 years. Our body count is one and one. With that said we generally do not do anything for Valentine's Day since we do for each other the remainder of the 364 days.

1) Gift giving is not a love language that I value. I find that people that equate gifts to love tend to have lower IQ and less of an understanding of what love is. They also tend to be sheep, however most people are sheep and that's why so many relationships fail nowadays. Most girls believe the same stuff other girls believe in.

2) I've changed my mind on Valentine's day over the years. I used to think that it was a a day just like any other for sheep to show their affection. But now I'm starting to see it as something more like Christmas. Christmas for me is a reminder to be kind and giving and show it at least one day in the year. Valentine's day is a similar concept where it reminds you to put effort into your relationship and reignite the fire.

3) I never expect a gift from my partner. To be honest, I prefer not even receiving one. If they want to write me a heartfelt letter or make some photo collage or something creative, I'm all for that. But I would prefer any money spent goes to future investments or vacations together.

4) As I mentioned, I've never cared for gifts. And expensive gifts make me feel more uncomfortable than grateful honestly. I could be happiest guy with a giftless relationship. Just using the money we would have to used on gifts to travel, buy a house, maybe buy my partner a ring, etc.

5) Gifts will never be necessary to me, either in giving or receiving. However, I don't mind thoughtful gifts. Like if my partner is really into reading fantasy novels and I hear about a cool one that came out recently and I see it, I'd get it for her. Or if my back is paining me and she decides to get me something she thought might soothe my back pain. Those are really nice gifts to receive and give. But trying to find a gift just because it's a gift giving occasion has never been my thing. Don't get me wrong. Christmas is a gift giving time as well, but I would never leave someone and it would never be a deal breaker if they were not to get me a gift and I would hope it's the same for them.

Get what I'm saying? It's not ever a necessary thing in a relationship, but thoughtful gifts should always be received graciously if someone decides to get something while thinking of your desires or needs.

For people that get random acts of love or gifts throughout the year I'm sure Valentine's wouldn't stand out so much but for those that dont.. it's nice to get one day to feel nice.

It usually doesn't mean much to me but I like to do stuff with my kidos, like make valentines chocolate, cookies or baking...

No I would be a little sad/let down but not gonna cause any issues because of it.

It's because most guys don't treat you special all year so to have one day where they do would be nice... but my ex never did.. so I would just buy myself something or do fun things with the kids. This year I will be all alone tho so it really sucks...

I really don't care if I receive anything on Valentine's Day :-). We always make sure to have some homemade sweets and treats for the kids. They always make me homemade cards and I love it. Mr. amazing will usually cook a nice meal and bring home some flowers.

To answer your question on the follow up points you made here.

1.) I find it almost like an obligation over a genuine act of love. It feels more transactional.

2.) I honestly hate Valentine's Day and nothing will ever change it. Doesn't matter if I am in a completely new relationship. An ex girlfriend of mine broke up with me on that day when I took the time to plan a fun weekend on the slopes. I don't buy gifts, I try to cook a nice dinner and spend a day doing something fun for both of us to enjoy.

3.) No, I never expect gifts from my girlfriend on that day. I am happy if I just get a heartfelt text or hug.

4.) No, not a dealbreaker if I don't receive one because I don't expect anything.

5.) I feel gifts have become mainstream due to Hollywood and commercialism. Like you spoil the one youblove with gifts to show it by giving an extravagant gift or doing something expensive.

Well I do find it a little strange to give and receive Valentine's gifts before the actual day as in my opinion that takes away from the pleasant surprise of giving and receiving gifts on Valentine's Day.  As for how important the day is to me, well it was one of the most important day's of the year to me when I was with my ex. We would not only exchange gifts but we would write each other cards and go out on dates. I may have not expected a gift from my ex but it was nice to receive one, and I would usually buy her a present. But if she didn't get me one I would be disappointed but it wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker. And finally I don't believe that gift giving is the only way to show your affection towards your special someone. You show it through deep emotional connection as well.

I used to get really worried about it and wanted to make a big deal out of it when I had a girlfriend but it made me angry then and makes me angry now how it is literally just a commercial holiday to buy stuff. If you have some one and want to remind them how much you love them then awesome. But otherwise we make way more of a thing out of it then it should be.

Everyone has a different love language. One of the more prominent ones (less so for our generation) is gifts.
Some people give and need constant gifts to feel loved. I don't think it's that horrible (not my thing though).
I would never NEED or EXPECT a gift from a partner. Idon't think that's healthy in any relationship, even gift love languages. But those thoughtful things carry a lot of meaning!
