An Appeal to Equality: Why Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized

1. Because homosexuals want the legal benefits that marriage brings.

In modernity, marriage is a legal status. The government cares about your marriage status, because it collects this information for collecting taxes, for demographics, for providing government aid to needy people, and so on. If homosexual couples are not recognized as legally married, then they will be recognized as singles who cohabit and raise children. Inheritance of valuables of deceased homosexuals will go towards their immediate relatives (brother, sister, mother, father, etc.) instead of their homosexual partner and adopted children.

2. Because homosexuals may have the money to pay for wedding costs.

Weddings are usually very expensive and grand. People make weddings as big as they are, because they symbolize a big milestone in a person's life. As a result, a lot of money goes into the planning of the wedding. Homosexual couples may have family members and friends who support the union emotionally and financially. So, selling services to homosexuals may be profitable, as much as installing extra drinking fountains for colored people was back in the 1950s.

3. Because some religious institutions want to bless same-sex unions.

If the national, secular government were to forbid same-sex marriages, then that would prevent some religious institutions from blessing same-sex unions. The religious official who solemnizes or blesses the union is usually the person who signs the marriage license. No marriage license by the government? No wedding.

4. Because homosexuals are just legally married.

Just because one is legally married does not mean one is recognized as married by the common people of society. There are many people in society. If a homosexual couple seeks a cleric to bless the union but the cleric refuses, then the couple is allowed to seek a different cleric, preferably someone who has no opposition against homosexuality, or a government official. The legalization of same-sex marriage provides a common ground for people who oppose and support same-sex marriage on a personal level but not on a systematic, government level.
