My ex reached out after 4.5 no contact?

We ended things in the heat of the moment but we also had a lot issues with ourselves that ruined the relationship.

4.5 months later I get a message from him asking how I am going and he’s sorry. I replied back and we ended up having a friendly chat on the phone. I told him I’ve been great and I’m really happy with fixing my issues. He on the other hand isn’t doing to good and he said he’s still trying to fix his problems and become happy. He did say he’d love to try again but I told him I’d like to really take things slow this time.

I also noticed he messaged me and the way he talked to me on the phone is if we were like still together. I hoped for the best for him and that was it. A weeks gone by heard nothing. Why would he reach out and then nothing? I know I said let’s go slow but I get the impression he’s changed his mind?
