so im pretty new here, but have noticed that many people here are like 20-50 or so (some being in their 60s or 70s too) so i was wondering if you´ve ever thought about what your life would´ve been like if you took a different path
I'm very content with mine. I'm a VFX software engineer focusing on R&D for computer graphics for use in films, TV, games, archviz, things of this nature.
It's not like an ultimate dream job or anything. Sometimes it gets pretty boring just sifting through bug reports and trying to fix bugs in code I didn't even write and I tend to procrastinate a lot. Yet it pays the bills and sometimes I have moments where I'm working on a brand new algorithm or data structure or get some creative control over the end-user design and get so excited that you'd have to tear me away from the computer just to remember to do basic things like eat food.
I do have a dream of retiring and becoming an independent video game developer once more (how I started and broke into my industry). Yet I tried commercial gamedev and it's not for me. I only really enjoy it when I'm independent and get total design control over my games, so it's something I'm looking forward to after I retire and I just want to make freeware games for fun and not depend on making games for my livelihood. My VFX job now is more desirable to me for my livelihood; it's easier and pays better.

I love what I do but wish I could have done accounting, nice to have had something to fall back on or even finance this business if I was willing to pay taxes

I left school at 16 and got my first full time job then. I think given the circumstances i was in I did well... I'm currently working part time and studying and though it's taken me a few tries due to health circumstances I think I'm now on the right track to getting my degree and getting into the field.

I don't really have one and never cared to figure out what I wanted to do. Only thing right now I have a passion for is cleaning, but that's it. No clue what else I have the ability to do at the moment. But I know it's all about trial and error. So I'll get there eventually... just slowly.
I would love to be a psychologist but I know that is not going to be an accessible career for me because I have a very low tolerance for unpleasant smells and a lot of mental patients take medications that give them distinguished scents.
I think if I could go back, I would have done accounting instead of English as my first major and became an accountant.
I’m happy with my career as it is very fulfilling, but I do rarely wonder what it would have been like had I gone down the modeling path. Ah well. Too old now.
I’m doing what I wanted to do as a teenager, do wish it paid more but I’m happy with it
It would not matter much.
The things that vex me most are part of the "world path".
I'd still need to face that shit no matter what profession I' m in.I wish that I'd included teacher training after I qualified as an Engineer, but given the way that Male teachers have been forced out of the profession I'm glad I've did not go down that route.
I am a people person, so my career is perfect for me.
Worked quite a few jobs out of school, and pretty damn happy where I am. Can’t really imagine doing anything else now
I work in IT as a Network Administrator. I like the job. It pays well and there is demand for it. I also teach computer science at a local college. I like that as well. I want to eventually give up the day job and teach fill time.
