What would you do as a mother or father, if you found out that your 16 year old's employer fired her for taking a day off when 4 friends died?

So the story goes that her friends were out for a birthday party 4 died, one was in a coma. This happened in Colorado, it's a real event. The girl asked for the day off so she could deal with her friends deaths.. The boss fired her.

It was viral on both tiktok and Twitter.

As a parent, what would you do?

I am not a parent, but I would tell her that no job is worth that kind of bullshit, and I would help her find a new job.

Thankfully sonic got wind of what happened, the manager was terminated and the girl got her job back. So there is a happy ending here.. It's just sickening to me that people can be so callus.. I get it you have a business to run, but do you really think an employee who is distraught like that will actually be able to do her job? It would be cheaper and better for the company to just give her the day off. People like him do not deserve managerial positions.

I wouldn't have aired it out on social media because future colleges and future employers will worry about the possibility she will post controversial messages if they have a falling out with her.

As a parent, I would have written a letter to the franchise board and helped her find something else.

One of my daughters had to deal with an employer paying her below minimum wage and I coached her on how to talk to her supervisor about the error.

When the supervisor told my daughter that she had agreed to the lower wage (which she did not) and there was no fixing it with payroll, I wrote a letter to the supervisor's manager explaining that I was writing the letter because my daughter was only 16 and it was her first job. I pointed out the wage discrepancy without making accusations and explained how important it is for a 16 yo to see adults take responsibility for mistakes because we're not perfect.

He apologized and issued backpay. My daughter is still working there 4 years later.

This is not surprising at all. I’ve seen people fired for worse. This one gov job I had required us to bring an “excuse note” back from funerals just as you would from a doctors visit. Its ridiculous but nothing new. I’d just help support my kid until they got hired elsewhere. Pointless posting crap on social media, tik tok of all places

I get that.. I'm not a dad.. But I'm not a nice person when you mess with someone I care for.

For example, my wife did some work for a YMCA in my area. They didn't pay her. Or rather the person responsible for paying her, took a long vacation after her work was done. 2 months passed no check in the mail.. So I reached out to a judge friend of mine and the sheriff. I showed up at the YMCA with a writ of execution, and started confiscating things to make up for money that she was to be paid.. The director found out about it and immediately cut my wife her check. And we left. They won't do business with her any more because they are "afraid" of her. But they aren't worth doing business with if they can't pay what they owe.

I would have reacted differently if the kid was physically or verbally assaulted but getting fired is something that adults and teens have to go through. Its life. Its not worth showing out over, especially at a fast food place like Sonics that barely pays minimum wage. She may as well go to Mcdonalds. Oh no that story I told in my response has nothing to do with the story in the original post, it's just something I did in behalf of my wife when someone cheated her.

Honestly if I were the girl in the story I'd have just gotten a new job. And I kind of support it being on social media. If that had not happened that sonic location would still continue to have a shit manager.

Crappy jobs like that is why you have to study hard, go to college and major in something good. I would just tell my kid to find another job. There are plenty of fast food jobs around. People are begging for workers. A sub shop I know is now closed on Mondays because they can't find people to work. What I want to know is how did these kids die? Was it fenyanyl?

I would have told her that's what happens when you work somewhere you're worthless and she should find a job where her value is needed so these types of things don't happen.

The job is not worth it. Not rhe end of the world. Her focus is not about work…but learn about how some crappy people are so always use any life lessons as a way to become a better person…

You have to remember there are students that will take advantage of that, and start wanting the day off for stuff that's not true.

It's best the school has a rule about taking off for funerals so everyone will know what to expect during the bereavement time.
Ask your principal to write a procedure students can follow in cases such as this.
