Parents, would you like your child to get you a car for your birthday?

My father has been an amazing dad, amazing person and a very supportive and a great influence in my life.

He bought me my first car when I was 18 and he always did his best to make our lives happy. He’s the best dad I could dream about and I am lucky to have him.

I want to buy him a new car for his next birthday a few months later.

How would you feel if your adult daughter got you a new car, would you be happy?

Maybe. I'm kind of picky though, so if she got me a car I would get for myself, I would be happy. If she got me some other car, I would be nice about it and appreciative, but secretly a bit disappointed and bothered. Not disappointed in not getting the car I wanted, but disappointed she wasted her money on something I didn't want and wouldn't have wasted my money on. I would rather not receive a car than receive a car that I wouldn't buy myself. Does that make sense?

I just don't like wasteful gifts, especially not expensive ones. I don't want you wasting money on me. But if it were something useful and beneficial, that's another story:

I get what you mean, the one I wish I can buy would be about 5-10 times better than his current one. So I think he would like.

probably. I don't know if your dad's attitude is like mine. But all the same, it might be good to do some detective work. People's ideas change. I think about cars here and there, and those two (Ford Shelby Cobra and Tesla S) are just what I have been considering the most the last year or so. Previously it was a few other different cars. If you find out what he's looking at, you could do it easily. Maybe ask him what car you should get for yourself and hear his suggestions, or ask him what is important in a car? Gas mileage? The color? The manufacturer? Which car manufacturers are the best, dad? :)

For example, I think white is the best color because it is easy to keep clean. Gas mileage is important, that's why I like the Tesla S. I'm also quite keen on the auto driving feature as I hate driving and hope that cars drive themselves asap. I can't wait for the day I can read or sleep in the car trip instead of paying attention to not crashing.

I'm not sure if I would want that for a gift because I would want to choose the car. It's kind of like how I can't buy clothes for my wife because she is picky.

I would be very honored and touched that my daughter loved me enough to want to give me such an expensive gift. But, unless she was extremely well off and successful, I might be more concerned about her future and want her to save her money for retirement.

Something I would think special, though, might be a paid, dream vacation for my wife and me. It's something we would always remember and cherish. It would have more sentimental value than a car because cars can get old or wrecked, but memories never fade. Whenever we recalled that vacation, we would think about our amazing daughter.

I saw a video where a guy graduated college or played football or something and then bought his dad a truck. The dude broke down crying big time and was ecstatic. You should do it

On the assumption that I knew she had done well and could afford it , Id be RAPT ! Think I would cry , ask her if she was sure , stuff like that , but I would literally be over the moon.

Don't think I have seen a daughter / son do that , unless much much later than age 26 , lovely idea , again assuming all the above.

I'd probably cry. I think that's a beautiful gesture. I think your dad did a great job raising you and he should be proud you turned into such a remarkable young woman.

I bought my dad a zero turn mower a fee years back for all he did for me growing up. I think he took it as a blow to his pride. He accepted it and loves it but I think it was hard being that it's his job to take care of his kids and having them return the favor was a hard pill to swallow.

I'd just be concerned how deep she went into her bank account for it. And hope there aren't too many strings attached if its from one of her old school homies. If it was a favor and I'd hope this wasn't bribing if it was from her boyfriend.

I don’t think it qualifies as buying something for someone if they have to pay for it. I’d 100% refuse a “gift” like that.

It depends how much money earn, If you can afford it go for it.

I can’t afford his dream car yet, but I am thinking to buy him a way better car than he’s got now.

I always promised him in childhood that when I’d grow up I’d buy him a Ferrari. Sadly, I can’t afford Ferrari, but I think he’d still be happy. 😇
