Confused!! Does he miss me? or just want to be friends?

My boyfriend broke up with me almost a month ago after dating for a year and a half. I took the break up really hard and during that first week I called and texted him all the time. He just kept telling me that he cared about me a lot and doesn't want me out of his life and to just give it time and things will get better. We had such a great relationship and I have no idea why he just wanted to end things. For a week I stopped all contact with him but 2 days ago I just sent him a quick text asking how he's been.. The convo went really well. And he asked if I was going to be out this weekend for a friends birthday and I said I think so and all he wrote back was good.. Now I'm all confused cause before he was saying he just wanted to be friends.. Does he still just want to be friends or is he starting to miss me? I can't tell if he's just being nice in the text messages to be nice or if they mean something else.. I need a guys opinion!

I think it's pretty safe to say he just wants to be friends. He may be keeping you around as a option. One thing though, when a guy breaks up with you, he usually means it. Believe him. If he was missing you I think he would be texting you first, not the other way around. Break ups are hard. Often the one doing the break up will try to remain friends. It eases their transition back into the single world and makes yours harder by giving you false hope. He can't miss you by the way if you stay in contact. Sorry I am not a guy, but I have been through break ups, many times as dumper and dumpee.

speaking as a guy whos still friends with all his exs, right now I think he just wants to be friends, I don't quite think he likes you, keep me posted and tell me more about it
