Why does a girl usually hold eye contact with you, eventhough you catch them and they don't immediately look away?

I've read where if a girl stares at you but she usually looks away fast to avoid being seen for whatever reason, but if a girl a looks at you, you look back and she holds eye contact for 4 seconds, what's the reason for that?

This girl at my college that I am interested in, and I've said hi to her twice in passing to test the waters, but I've been unsure to approach her. We've had one classes together temporarily but not anymore. On Tuesday as I was getting to ready to leave, I'm in the parking lot waiting for cars to go by the road way to clear so I can pull out. I'm staring at my dashboard waiting and this one car goes by and i see someone looking in my direction so I look up and it's her, and she stared at me for about 4 seconds before she looks forward and continues driving. It caught me off gu6so I didn't really do anything but stare back. She didn't smile so I wasn't sure of what to think of it, she had kind of a curious anticipation look on her face. I kicked myself for not at least trying to wave or something but my mind went blank. How can I know if this was just a meaningless stare or not?

In my opinion she might be interested. Because I also stare or hold eye contact with somebody that I like, I dont just 'flirt' with everybody and do this meaningless. My advice is that you should be aware of is this eye contact frequently made and you should smile at her when you make it. When you will be sure you should approach her because you have nothing to lose and you would know where are you.

Oh and, if she is indeed interested, when she stared at me from her car that day, and I didn't smile or wave or anything do you think I may have ruined it? Do you think she may have thought I wasn't interested? It just caught me off guard that's the only reason. After she looked away after that I saw she kinda sighed a bit, and today when she drove passed me, she didn't look at me. Do I mess up?

You are an overthinker just like me! In my situation my crush also don't smile at me but always stares at me. So you didn't messes up. Because if she really likes you she wouldn't lose the interest. She may overthinks too and she may think

that she did something wrong because you didn't smile at her. If she doesn't show any interest from that time she may lose interest but if she really likes you she won't.
Maybe she just needs time to process all the things and then decide what is the best for her.
And it's not your fault that you didn't smile because me and my crush rarely ever smile to each other. I think it's because we really like each other and try do present our selves in the best.
I also don't know what to do in the moment when we are staring at each other.

Well, sorta, like I said I don't have the chance to run into her often, but months ago, when the same thing happened where I was waiting to pull out of my parking spot and waiting for cars to pass, there was some stop and to traffic and when her car stopped in front of mine, I just so happened to look up from my phone and she was already looking at me [ not sure how long] with a serious facial expression so I quickly looked back down at my phone and then the traffic cleared up and she drove off. The other possible moment was when, I was going into the cafeteria, she was leaving and when i got in her line of vision she smiled and look down and not to be creepy but because I was caught off guard i stared at her, and she still smiled while looking at the ground, I waited till she came through the door way before I went in, and she never made eye contact but she walked close by me exiting, held the door open and she definitely had room to go around a quicker way. I took that as a possible sign but not sure. I never initiated anything except for me saying hi to her those 2 times, but I never initiated eye contact with her, cause I didn't want to risk being creepy. What I just typed out took place a few months ago.

Okay, I can safely assume that she might be into you. The serious facial expression might just be her natural face. Also known as the RBF (resting bitch face). I have one and I am into this guy. I initiate eye contact a lot (we are basically strangers as well) but I become aware of the fact that I probably look too serious for him to understand the signals Im sending him. Next time, wave at her or smile. If you’re brave enough, go up to her and ask her how she’s been (and mention how you had INSERT class together etc)
