Why does he ask about my weekends plans?

This guy has put every classic sign out there that he likes me but he's one of those shy guys. He used to ask me what I was doing that day whenever he saw me. Lately its turned into asking what my weekend plans are and he does this almost every weekend. This past weekend he asked me what my plans were I said I didn't have much going on. He asked me if I had any fathers day plans and I said probably but I don't know what they are yet. He made a joke and changed the subject. Then I saw him today and he asked me what I did over the weekend? I told him and he asked me a few follow up questions about what I did then he told me what he did. What's up, was he just making small talk? Or did he want to ask me out?

As a guy who is shy about asking a girl out, here is my take. If you have been free other weekends and he didn't ask you out, it's just small talk. But if you've typically said you had plans, he was probably looking for an opening to ask you out. If you give even the hint that you may only have tentative plans - like this past weekend - he won't want to make you choose or inconvenience you or, most likely, get shot down. If you want him to ask you out, be clear that you are free. If not, just give him signals that you're not interested such as referencing another guy you're seeing or crushing on.
