I didn't realize that once I was a 'guru', I could ask one extra question. So here it is...
What dish did your mom make that noone else could perfect the same way?

(I'm going to bed, maybe I'll dream of my mom's banana pudding...)

I don't know about being the only one who could get it just right, but "oven fried chicken" was right up there. This was a "Sunday dish" she'd make a couple of months or so. Every so often during the baking, she would baste the breaded chicken with the melted shortening and chicken fat. The most healthy? Maybe not, but delicious.
Also, she made a version of Stuffed Peppers that I never had anywhere else. She use ground beef, some ground pork, corn, and sliced black olives to stuff green peppers. It was not made with any sort of obvious "sauce"- no Alfredo, no tomato sauce, etc- it was fine in its own juices developed during the cooking. We haven't been able to find a recipe in all of her recipe boxes/books/ etc. The secret may be lost forever.
Yeah - that was my reaction, and other than THOSE, I am NOT really a big fan of most kinds of stuffed peppers. Just give me (whatever is used for the ) stuffing in a bowl - save the $ for the pepper. But, there was something about her recipe that just needed that pepper as a "catalyst" of sorts to start that tasty chain reaction going! She's up in Heaven making those peppers for the angels!
I can't say there's anything my mom makes or made that stands out. I learned to badge from my mom and cook from my dad and I've learned to love flavor on my own lol
My parents are decent in the kitchen but there for us very much stereotypical "white" food. I love big bold flavors so I've developed my own cooking style and baking habits that in basically all aspects outstrip theirs. I have basic white friends and relatives that refuse to eat my cooking because I cook with flavor, but nearly everyone i cook for gladly comes back for more (or in one instance offers me their daughter in order to get access to more).
All that to say, I prefer my own cooking to my mother's.
That's because you have good taste đ
My mom makes delicious rouladens (I forget how to spell that, but itâs beef rolls). She uses her grandmotherâs recipe (my momâs paternal grandparents were immigrants from Germany and rouladens are a German dish for anyone who doesnât know). I love when she makes them. Iâm hoping she teaches me how to make them myself
My parents also make fantastic rouladen. :-)
She made a specific regional cod dish that I tried many times but never achieved quality she made. However I think I found out her secret. She used pineapple juice instead of lime juice, that lets the cod fillets completely lose its fishy aroma
Ah, the magic of a mother's touch in the kitchen! One dish that my mom made exceptionally well was her lasagna. Despite my culinary escapades, I've never quite replicated her perfect balance of flavors. The rich layers of gooey cheese, savory tomato sauce, and perfectly seasoned meat always made her lasagna an unparalleled delight. It's a meal that not only satisfied my appetite but also carried the warmth of home with every bite. 🍝â€ïž
Ah, your mother. A 286, no doubt!

Really? It was just about anything that she cooked. She was a very good cook
And then when she came to live with me She asked me where I learned How to cook I said remember I used to get.
Dinners started after school So she said so I taught you how to cook and I said no I taught myself how to cook , but you taught me how to blend things and i've taken that to a whole nother level so cooking's one thing , but you have to know how to blend certain certain seasonings And Spices, but yeah, it didn't matter. She no matter what she cooked it was going to be really good
She cooked an awesome Roast with Gravy ( died in 1998 ) had plenty of Roasts in 26 years , and still never found as good , also she cooked this Chicken with veggies and stock., she tried to show me , never tasted close.
I don't east deserts or processed sugars today , but also she made these incredible pavlovas always with cream.
Just all out of a different era , I should have in school ( form 4 plus ) taken home economics ( cooking ). not woodwork , but in those days both tended at attract steriltypical genders.
My mom used to make something called Chicken Pot-au-Feu. Basically just chicken with potatoes and various vegetables simmered in a broth. I want to say she used cooking sherry in it, and thatâs what made the broth so good. Definitely miss that.
Pain de thon which translate to Tuna bread and it's done with a tuna can, old bread from the day prior that get soaked in tuna water everything get mixed and put into a cake mold (not sure about the words...) and then in the oven. Normally it's done another ways but my mom made it this ways cause we are pretty poor and it's taste absolutly perfect, one of the things I like to eat the most.
Honestly? Almost everything, lol. Whenever I went to the house of any friend or acquaintance or whatever their food almost always tasted like shit. Wasn't even close.
Restaurants are more professional, but those friends/acquaintances did NOT know how to cook. Lol.
I have yet to find better seafood spaghetti. I'm not sure what she does to make it so good, but you can't just mix the seafood into alfredo and add clam broth. I guess you could use a vodka reduction sauce, that would bring you a bit closer. That's still not quite on the money though.
My mum systematically burned scrambled eggs. If you remember in chemistry class kids burning strands of hair over a bunsen burner... same smell of burning protein.
My sister is a good cook and I would back my skills too. My dad became fairly solid after he retired. My mum is complete rubbish in the kitchen.
For those of you with an answer other than ice cubes, I'm jealous. You have to understand Mom was British and she thought the spice rack was for decorative purposes in the kitchen. I thought vegetables came in a Frozen block. I thought soup came in a can. I thought 20 minutes was the appropriate cooking time for pasta corn or just about anything else. That woman could cook the taste or mouthfeel out of any substance but before me.
So glad I'm curious. I love veggies now. All kinds of unusual foods.
My mom makes really good vegetable stew and stir fried veggies which just go so well with Arwa rice. I didn't enjoy it few years back because it was too much 'healthy' and less 'savoury' but it's my comfort meal now
Funny you ask it when I just had it yesterday and thought âmeh, only mom got this rightâ. Thereâs an Easter cookie sheâd make that I never learned bc I was busy learning to make the more complicated one.
Her stew beef or chicken. It always tastes amazing when she makes it and not as much when I try to replicate it. She also makes a Trinidadian dish called Callaloo, which again... is amazing and I can never make the same.
Easy to make, hard to perfect
Apple pie, I keep trying to make her sell them. She wonât. Iâm not much of a baker and she doesnât measure so I donât think I could really replicate them well.
Chicken verde casserole! Wish I had paid closer attention to how she made it bc I will never have it again the way she did it.
My mom is used to cooking without any spices. Therefore her dishes aren't theost tasty ones although I appreciate her for the effort she puts in to cook me a meal
Chicken paprikash. I've seen her make it almost in her sleep. I've known her recipe since I was a kid and I still don't make it a good as she does
Home made from scratch broccoli casserole, and scallop potatoes. Those dishes are for Thanksgiving and Christmas. but my sister gets it right because my mom trained her really well. Its some of the most finest side dishes to go along with any kind of ham or meat or Turkey. I canât think of anything else any better for side dishes that are so tasty
There isn't one. My mother, bless her soul, was an average cook at best. We didn't starve, but there was no signature meal.
My mom's chocolate cake. She used my aunt Marie's recipe and my wife makes it with the same recipe. It is not the same
chicken alfredo
her sauce is homemade and it tastes like mac'n cheese almost
The way my mother used to make Chicken Fricassée. Since we were kids, she wouldn't use white wine. I think that's why I like my mom's version more than my wife's; she follows Cooks Illustrated's recipe.
She wasn't a particularly good cook, but my father wasn't supportive so she didn't try anything new.
Lemon Meringue Pie!
Unfortunately none, I canât stand her cooking. My dad was always the better chef haha.
Hahaha.. That's cute... Nothing.. My mother hasn't cooked in years..
Wait, I take that back.. She has cooked, it's on occasion though.. And you know she just didn't do it much..
I once saw as well... Now, I'm blind to the mechanations of reality seeing that seasoning and spices come from another world and in which it has made me realize that putting things on a pot and pan for my own food is not... My job.. LOL..

Alright, since you asked so sweetly and nicely..
I have a theory about this.
You see, mom has cooked for you since your birth. So whatever she cooks for you, will become imprinted in your memory. Especially if it's the first time you ever tasted that dish. If she does that a couple of time, suddenly that becomes "the correct taste" in your head.
Since anyone else will cook it slightly different, it means that no one will cook it with the correct taste from your point of view.
Then again, it's just a theory.
Ummm-um!! Chicken fried steak with the gravey. Then there is chicken & dressing at the holidays. Naturally everything she cooked was excellent.! â€ïžâ🔥
Mutter paneer with Indian spices. Itâs not basic like othersâ mutter paneer. Creamy and spicy at the same time.
Oh that sounds good!
Sausage gravy. I can not for the life of me get the flour to emulsify with the fat and milk.
My mother was teacher of home economics... Cooking etc
She tried making everything
In particular what I remember are the more difficult dishes like Baked Alaska
And lasagne (given we're not Italian lol)
I loved my moms meatloaf and turkey stuffing I never really liked anyone else's I have had.
Cinnamon toast. My mom makes it better than anyone else.
She taught me with cinnamon, sugar, and butter broiled in an oven for a minute
Spaghetti. Broke ass loser food i refuse to eat. But her broke ass made it awesome.
Maybe I was too harsh with the "broke ass loser food" and that has to do with childhood trauma but that's for a shrink to decide and my shrink has a restraining order against me.. if you can cook it like my Mother you are wife material. I think it's in the sauce. Mom's had meat in it and it wasn't sweet or sour and didn't give me heartburn. You could taste the flavor of the tomato. She wasn't even Italian she was Irish.
Well when I was a kid I used to think that she was the best cook in the world then I had to learn how to cook in that realize that the only reason why she was so good is because she spent a lot of time practicing.
Such a thing doesn't exist in my universe, she has always been a terrible cook. It's probably wise to not remind her though, diplomacy matters 😂
My mom made the best flan I ever had. No one else makes it like her.
Sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast casserole. My mom always makes it on Christmas morning. It never fails that I get seconds 😇
Pork Chops with Mashed Potatoes, Apple Sauce.
My mum has always been a good cook.
Her chicken schnitzel would be the best for me.
Baking would be lemon meringue pie.
Lasagna! Nobody makes lasagna like my momma.
Chicken and rice with her special sauce
Yes it was ⊠I miss her
She passed in 2005
Thank you
Her Seafood chowders i tried to make it myself not the same.
Everything she made.
Nothing can replicate that spark of magic.
Nothing now lol all her food is not edible
I had a rough day on my period and I asked her to make some lentilsâŠ. Lmao she made them so salty omg I almost choked
White man tacos. It's been like 30 years since I've had them
Pizza di Pasqua. But donât tell my grammy. lol
Just like everyone, Iâll go basic and say eggs lol
french fries boiled egg
Not sure. I'm the one who always get it right.
Oh, my mom knows how to tie lemongrass properly tho. I can't
My mom cooks everything well.
Beans & sauerkraut stew.
That sounds kind of good.
It's really good, you should try it :D
external-content.duckduckgo.com/.../
I will. Reminds of something my mom would try since she's been eating less meat
Anything and everything
Marinated crab
My mom made excellent macaroni and cheese!
My mom is lazy fat ass who never learned to cook.
