I haven't had a girlfriend in years, would you think that was weird?

i'm 23 and I haven't had a girlfriend since I was 18. I've had hook ups since then but no girlfriend. despite this I am a good looking guy and I have no real flaws stopping me from getting a girlfriend besides problems I have caused myself by being a slacker like running out of money, being broke...but then again I haven't felt the need to get a girlfriend. I've only met a few girls who have interested me enough for me to want to date them but they're too high maintenance for me right now (well really it's like I'm more of a slacker) so I just go out and hook up instead.

girls have asked me before directly or indirectly if I have a girlfriend and I say no and they seem like shocked. is it really that bad being out of a relationship for so long? I like being single and I don't yet need someone in my life so why do people rush this?

You are 23, so, no, this isn't a big deal. 18 to mid-twenties seems like a normal time for a guy to enjoy having fun and not always have the need for a relationship.

The slacker, broke part of this sounds like a problem. If you keep in that mode, you will be setting yourself up for real problems sooner than later. I mean, face it, at your age you should have a lot of energy and youthful enthusiasm for whatever you want to pursue. In another 10 years that won't be the case, so if you are not catching the bug for working hard and getting somewhere now, it will only get worse later. I have seen guys like this in their 30's and 40's, not a pretty site.

I would focus on your lack of motivation for improving your situation in life. The girlfriend part will work itself out later.

They were shocked probably because they think you're a catch and are surprised that a girl hasn't taken you yet. As for how long it's been, It's not a bad thing, and certainly not a dealbreaker, but it is something that *some* women may wonder about.

Such as, "is there something wrong with him that made other women not want to date him or did he choose not to date? If he chose not to, why? Is he afraid of commitment? Is he a player who just hooks up with a different girl every night?"

Those kind of questions may wander through a girl's head. But that does not mean that every girl will care or that they won't date you because of it. It's just the type of things we think about when seeing a new guy who hasn't been in a relationship for a while.

Life's short as they say, and you're still young. So I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with living your life without being tied down. Just make sure if you find that special girl...don't lose her.
