Why does he want to be friends with benefits, but he's still protective with me?

So there's this guy I've known for 4 years and we've been in the same group for those four years and we have gotten super close throughout the years. Since 2 years ago we have been on and off flirting with each-other. I've blown him twice and he's told me multiple times that he really wanted to bang me and that he wants to be friends with benefits but I've just ignored the question bc I want a relationship with him. A couple months ago he went through a bad breakup (they lasted a year) and that may be the reason he's not ready for a relationship but I don't know maybe he's still hung up on her. Anyways this guy is confusing the hell out of me. There are a lot of girls he flirts with, but he told my friend (who's also friends with him) that I'm his number one choice when he wants to get domed. Also, he doesn't always try to hookup with me. Like sometimes he calls me telling me he's coming over and we'll just hangout and talk and watch a movie. Last week we hangout three days street aha and this week he called me three times asking what I was doing (I was busy all those three times😕) also one time he asked me after I blew him " if there were more boys here tonight would you still have blown me?" Like wtf does that mean?😂

Ps I'm sorry my question doesn't really make sense, I don't think he's being "protective" over me necessarily, what I mean is that he doesn't want me stamping around with other guys

He wants to play the field but he is more than likely feeling jealous of the thought of you being with other guys because he wants you.. You're probably like his forbidden fruit at the moment. That's doesn't mean he wants a relationship though.

Everything you've said here indicates he wants nothing more than to have sex with you with no strings attached but doesn't want anyone else to have you. it also sounds like he wants to be able to sleep with other people.

Simplest way to look at this is: He is wasting your time. that is time you will never get back so don't waste it when you could be spending it on someone worth your time, or even other productive things. He doesn't sound protective or even that jealous, he sounds like he could be a bit controlling.
