My boyfriend became suddenly more romantic, is it because I expressed more appreciation than before?

He is usually a good boyfriend and he talks to me daily and is very supportive. But in the last two weeks, he has been busy with a new job and his strict fitness regimen (he lost a lot of weight so he has to always devote himself to working out and keeping it off) and though we spoke a lot and met up, we didn't go on a real date-just more hanging out with friends and alone. It was making me feel taken for granted like he's becoming casual.

I am not a nagger but I felt distant and sad because I was scared he didn't care about me as much and just the sex. Suddenly he bought me a present and became more attentive and took me out. I told him how happy I was that he did that and gave him so much hugs and kisses and my mood was just a lot happier.

He was so happy in return and said we have not been going out enough together and now I will make sure we do that more often.

Did he change because of my mood? Or did he know that he wasn't being romantic enough?

Sounds to me like he realized he likes you when you pointed out the 'taken for granted' thing.
Then when he stepped up and showed more thoughtfulness, you rewarded him with love and affection. He likes this.

You have stumbled upon a secret to relationships, people and life in general.
When a man does something nice for a woman and she rewards him with love and affection he will feel appreciated and loved and will want to do it again.
When he feels appreciated he will take care of those around him.
Same works for women. Something I have always found to be true: if I make my woman happy and feel good, she will respond by wanting to make me feel good.
If a person ever falters a little on the giving side, a little appreciation and encouragement for the things they do do, rather than nagging and show of disappointment, usually brings them back to giving more.
Everybody likes being appreciated and making someone happy.
Unless they're messed up. :)
