What does it mean if a guy calls you fat? Is it something that should be taken seriously?

Ok.. I know this might sound stupid but this is something that has been bothering me ever since it happened. I'll try to make this short... So, one of my guy friends (who I wouldn't exactly consider that much of a friend since we only talk in English class and we aren't that close) once said "you're fat." and I was in a good mood and everything and I know how silly & how much of a joker he can be sometimes so I responded jokingly with an "excuse me?"... and then he showed a straight face and said "It's true." and that's when I kept my mouth shut & started thinking that he might be serious... but then he said the same thing to my REALLY skinny friend to which we both looked at each other & laughed cuz he was clearly kidding... but I'm not sure that's the case w/ me... I thought maybe he was actually serious but covered it up by calling my friend fat so he wouldn't make me feel bad about myself (so he basically felt guilty) but I don't know... I'm almost 140 pounds and my height is 162cm + I'm 16 & tbh, I never cared about what others thought of me until a GUY called me fat.. I don't care if girls say that to me. But a guy? That's someone I'm not used to getting offended by. So should I take his remark seriously or not or was he kidding? Thanks. :)

I've had a guy call me fat and turn right around and get engaged to a chick who shops in the plus size section. i was like "you wifing gabourey sidibe but im fat tho?" lol ok. sometimes they say it because they know its a huge insult to virtually any woman.

my thing is, who is he to talk about your weight? are you fat? do you think ur fat? if you love your body and think you are sexy then more than likely he was trying to hurt your feelings... why does he get that power? is he sexy, rich and gorgeous? im willing to bet he may have some flaws too so call him on it just like he insulted you. hit them back where it hurts and then they will learn to leave you alone. basically this guy is just an acquaintance to you, he isn't some guy your dating or wanting to fuck so his opinion is really not even that relevant

You're right I shouldn't care about what he thinks about me... but the reason why I got sensitive over this matter was because I was never called fat by a GUY b4 mostly girls and some people called me fat and others said I have a great body so everybody's opinions differ from 1 another but I THINK my body is perfect just the way it is... I'm not skinny nor fat (that's what I think) until this douche decided to make me feel bad about myself (cuz I'm sensitive). But now that you say it.. ur 100% right I shouldn't give a damn about him :) thank you for making me feel better ur amazing. <3

thank you :) girl don't even worry about him, he probably dreams about you. and there are people who prolly envy your figure. everyone has been called fat before. there's this bony girl who posted pics on this site complaining that all the guys she dates call her fat and she looked like she weighed 100 lbs.. so yea, were all fat lol

The guy is saying shallow things to you and your friend to make you both feel bad
you both need to ignore him cause you deserve better friends than him see immature
guys do that stuff to make their self feel good they have very little brains i hope you two

I mean he's playing on your insecurities. If he tells you that you're fat and you start to question if you are fat, then you feel less confident about yourself. If he's playing you, he'll likely do shit like that to make you feel like you are worthless or worth less than you you to feel about yourself. By manipulating you, you start to see him as superior and yourself as inferior. You feel you need to prove yourself to him. Then he "gives you a chance" and you think you won and got what you wanted and you feel validated. Meanwhile he bangs you and then bounces because that's what he was after. lol
