This guy and I had a thing for a while and all of the sudden he stopped texting me, but he still smiled at me when we passed each other at school and maintained eye contact. Thing got a bit awkward between us, because he sort of rejected me and I was a bit pissed, so I started to ignore him at school. We talked not too long ago though and we decided that we should "just be friends", but he's acting totally weird now around me. We basically act like we don't know each other, and he can NOT look me in the eyes anymore. We usually catch each other looking at each other in the cafeteria all the time, but both of us, especially him, always quickly looks away, so it becomes a quick nano second eye contact and it happens quite often. And when I pass him in the hallway he always tries to look busy, whether he's looking at his phone, or completely looking in the other direction. Why is he acting like this?

Some guys just can't accept "being friends", personally when a girl tells me she wants to be just friends, and I have a crush on her, it's kind of like hearing "your good enough to hangout with me, but I don't want a thing to do romantically with you" and if you like somebody, it's a bad feeling. True that some guys can be just friends, but if he wanted to date you, and got friend zoned, more than likely he's looking for somebody that will date him, because as guys see it, working out of the friend zone is the mount everest of the dating world. Very rarely will a man friend zone a woman, because if there is a chance at a relationship, we tend to explore it.

That being said, is he acting like a friend, or is he acting like a stranger? If he's acting like a stranger, than he put you in the friend zone as a nicer way of saying "what we had was fun, but I'm going my separate way now"

I hate the idea of getting into conflicts with women, men I can deal with, we say the things we need to, maybe we fight, but we go our separate ways. Dealing with a woman, is a lot more of a headache, we never know if what you saying is literal or has hidden meaning, we can't just get into a fight without being arrested, and everything we do or say is being analyzed. So saying things like "let's just be friends" is a good response to not get into an argument, it puts your mind on something while we quietly fade into the background.

He is ignoring you now and trying to show you that your presence doesn't affect him at all. He is giving you a straight answer that he is not into you anymore, so it will be better if you get over him soon. Move on. :)
