Hate to say it, but on public transport, women do the exact same thing. They will do whatever it takes to be on a two person seat that is big enough for two, all by themselves. If that is not possible, they will just stand. Those buses, trams and trains have video cameras and quite often people are charged for things on them. But women just dont feel safe or comfortable being next to a random guy.
The old primary (think America calls it 'Elementary') school thing of 'girl/boy germs' is very much valid here.

The seats that people choose in classrooms have nothing to do with who is sitting nearby, unless they there are friends in the room.
You as a person are a non-factor in this decision making process. Couple that with the fact that people tend to maintain consistent seating throughout the semester, you're fretting over 1-2 days at most where people happened to sit away from you.
Now, if you sat in seats that are in high demand and people still avoided you, then there might be something to talk about.
Maybe you just don't appear approachable? Or maybe people already have their preferences of who they want to sit by, so they just sit by those people instead. I often feel the same way in some classes though--there's often times when I have empty seats on either side of me or in my row.
