I think its safe to assume no mainstream lover is going to comment on this blog for fear of their head being proverbially ripped off.
That said, my ipod probably comes off a bit indie-rock-funk-techno chic but I like Usher and love Lady Gaga. Most mainstream isn't all the original, I'll go with that, but a lot of music/art isn't when you dig and search around. A lot of what is "truly original" isn't very assessable to most people because its unfamiliar and doesn't get the benefit of a doubt from most people. Get into the mechanics of it and the vast majority of music across most genres (mainstream to indie to metal to techno to whatever) is re-hashing found ideas in slightly different combinations compared to say a full string orchestral piece like Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima. Beibs and *insert some band you've never heard of* suddenly become a lot more a like.
Will anyone still be listening to your "new original" band 300-500 years from now? Or exists beyond an achieved wiki file somewhere? Who knows. Listen to what you like. I'd like for more people to make their own and respects others tastes in music, but, yeah, ...peeps are sheeps.

I think people just get caught up in what's popular at the time. And a lot of people are influenced by what people around them listen to. Chances are, if the majority of their friends listened to Metallica, Bob Dylan, or Sublime, they'd love it too. It seems like it's about conformity to me. I don't want to judge people as a whole, but that's been my experience. 98% of my friends listen to generic crap that's on mainstream radio 24/7 and whenever I try to put on rock or electronica, they don't even give it a chance. They go as far as turning a song on my cd in MY CAR after the first few seconds because they don't recognize it. I've actually listened to Kings of Leon way back in the day before they got famous and my friends all hated them. As soon as their songs were played on mainstream radio and all their friends heard it, they decided they loved them. Typical. It's all about listening to the same music the majority of their friends, co-workers, classmates listen to. Me? I really don't give a f***. I listen to what I consider good music and don't care about the crap I get for it because it takes a lot to change my opinion of something.
First off, I can already tell that you're going to get a lot of sh*t for this question so I'll be nice. I'm not the type of girl that gets all stupid obsessed over celebrities and I'll never understand why girls do that but some (not all) do. Justin Bieber is a cute kid, I'll admit that, but I only like 1 or 2 of his songs tops because I feel they all are written with the same topic or theme ("the girl he loves left him"). I think it's the same for the Jonas Brothers and whatever other famous boy singers or boy groups. Music has changed over time to conform to what the younger generation likes, its not made for adults it's made for teenage girls and guys. Most people say that "country isn't music" but I disagree, there is also a stereotype placed on them that says they are all sad songs also (this also isn't true in my mind). I love country music. I love all types of music, as long as it sounds good then I like it. Most times I'd prefer if the lyrics made sense though. Guys need to get the idea out of their heads that all girls are the same. They aren't.
i think that most not all girls tend to like the people that actually have vocal talent . all the other music that you listed is more of a musical talent. and I don't care what you say there is not much vocal talent in that music. The only category that resembles vocal talent is classic rock and lets be honest there isn't much there. girls like to sing along and sound pretty and stuff, all they need is a good beat in the back ground and it a great song. You are totally right about underground or nonmainstream music having much better music and a lot of times lyrics but if the actual vocals were as good as Justin Beiber and Usher then I guess the bands you are talking about would be the mainstream.
I think it's not just girls it's all people. There is a whole group of people who just do things to conform. They were the clothes people tell them to wear. They listen to mainstream popular music and basically are sheeple. But think of it this way too, is it better for someone to like good music because all their friends do, or because they like it. I used to go to a lot of hard rock concerts and people would go just because their friends did even though they hated that kind of music. So if people actually like justin beiber than more power to them

I don't really listen to much "mainstream" music... I mean, not saying the music I listen to is really obscure or weird or anything, I just usually listen to indie most of the time, and older music. I think, as teenagers, a lot of girls DO have a limited taste in music, really only listening to what comes on the radio and stuff...I'm not saying all do, but many I know at least. I think it's just a lot about fitting in. When they get older (as in not in high school or whatever), I don't think either gender has a "better" taste in music...though that's extremely subjective. Then again, most teenage guys I know have a rather narrow taste in music as well, but instead of listening to top-40 type stuff, they only listen to dadrock (not necessarily bad, just saying), rap, stuff like that, and that also seems to be about fitting in. As I said, I think it changes as they get older, they expand and develop their musical tastes, and that really applies to both genders.
What I'm saying is, I think a lot of the idea of girls listening to bad music comes from them wanting to fit in with their friends and the crowd.
Gah, it's late and this makes no sense and will probably end up making me sound super pretentious, haha. Maybe I'll come back when I'm not so sleep deprived and try to clarify my points. :P
Also, out of curiosity, what music do you like? x)I have to say, it's very single-minded of you to firstly generalise girls in that way, and secondly, presume that anyone that likes something different from you is wrong. I personally have a very varied taste in music, and in following with your question, I would like to suggest you open your horizons to other kinds of music? There is no 'good' or 'bad' taste in music, it is personal preference, and I suggest that if you want to make a statement like this, then you should at least have the balls not to hide behind 'anonymous'
You are generalizing almost all girls! Girls spend plenty of time developing their own tastes in music and listening to new innovating bands, artists etc. You can't think that all girls love Justin bieber. Maybe you are generalizing the only girls you know or are assuming that all girls love the top 100 songs on itunes store.
I love indie, alternative, progressive, experimental, posthardcore rock. Then I love dance, techno, and pop. The music I listen too isn't mainstream or all over mtv. Who says you drop music after a year too? Isn't that why we have mp3 files and ipods or mp3 players to begin with? So we can listen to the same songs that we love?
Try talking to different girls and see what music they like, I'm sure you'll be suprised that girls actually have awesome music taste!they are generic and honestly I have a friend who is so uncreative and she only listens to that sugary crap and artist that haven't and will never write their own stuff. main stream just seems to appeal to the masses, its all ( for the most part ) dumb. Its sad that only bands usually write their own stuff, and only a few female solo artist do it. but back to your original question its because girls are herd animals and few are ever lone wolfs like the guys, so they tend to just stick with the group, file in line and get passed over. I'm a girl but I don't listen to that ( mostly)
more of a rock person or piano. yes, your right girls do drop trends after a year but its all because we like to fit in, this makes us such easy prey to crazy abusive types, because for the most part we folliow a formula. but I dont
i know under pressure came before ice ice babyi grew up on classic rock, the first time I watch the Wall I was 6 years old. Baba O'Riley has to be about the best who song ever! anywho, so I kind of just went from there and started listening to what I found to be great! my fave bands are radiohead and the black keys! when it comes to mainstream though the only reason for listening to it is usually because I'm getting ready to go out with friends and go out dancing or something... and obviously you're not going to hear like "length of love" by interpol at a club. also depending on what friends I'm hanging out with on certain days even if we just go to get our nails done, I'll put something on the radio that we all like because lets face it who wants to be in a car with classical jazz if you're into heavy metal?
haha, move to WA. You'd be surprised how many girls cringe at the names Justin Beiber, Jonas, Hannah etc. I can't stand them either. It's even hard for me to listen to owl city. Music like Three Day's Grace, Beck, System of a Down, and Avenged Sevenfold is good music xD
Citizen Cope and Pennywise are good too.Thinking your music is more tasteful than anyone else's is foolish. There's always going to be someone thinking they're more refined than you. Mainstream is a pretty subjective marker too.
Girls a sheep. They do what their friends and what everyone else is doing, because they think it makes them more attractive and more popular. Anonymous, please don't tar me with the same brush, I'm one of a a handful of people who listens to anything that isn't on the radio in my year.
I go to a girls school.Well personally I'm into Bach, the late quartets of Beethoven;Elgar; Sibelius;& Vaughan-Williams.So all our questioners tastes in music seem pretty superficial & lightweight to me .
Unlike the questioner I am not a pseudo elitist cultural snob with my head up my arse so I do not regard my taste as ''good'' & other people's as ''bad''
Whadareyu! whadareyu!I disagree. Most of my friends have their individual taste in music. I'm more into rock/pop-punk like secondhand serenade, augustana and even guns and roses and Aerosmith. My favorite bands are coldplay and oasis. I hate listening to music that everyone else listens to. (bands aren't really the "scene"). I have friends who are into country, I have friends who likes boybands and some who like old school hip hop. Yes I do have friends who only listen to whatever's on the radio, but most times the girls that you're talking about probably like the "hot new" music because they play it at parties and they want to know the songs, but they most likely have other music on their ipod too:D
In my opinion your taste is more about following the crowd. It's as if there is this unsaid rule that if you like rock or indie then you have a higher, more sophisticated taste in music, but pop listeners have unintelligent taste. Therefore by you buying into the rule that says indie/rock=true good music...you have followed the trend and not the pop lovers who get criticized for their taste on a daily basis.
justien bieber is a faggot
his song s have no meaning. He hasn't lived those experiances so he is just singing words...real good songs are from singers who have lived through what their singing about...
you know what I want eminem to do a rap diss on justin beiberI AGREE! but that's not really fair, guys too. I mean guys are into rapping, right? or whatever. at least a lot of guys are, and I hate it. I love the 70's and 80's and same with movies. like have you seen the dumb movies and stupid romantic comedies these days?
Mainstream = :(
Underground Metal/screamo = :)
Don't assume all girls are sick with Beiber-Fever, because I would take Andy Six or Oli Sykes over that kiddo any day! :) I think any music that showcases the lead singers balls as he rips his vocals to shreds with piercing fry screams and gutteral death growls is legit in my book! :)okies.. lol
on that note I'm not into that fag.. lol :p
i don't technically have an answer..buuuuut this question was just to funny :)
but I wanted to let you know, not all girls are into that stuff :)
i like everything..even some mainstream
but I hate little wayne...no offence to people that love him :)Currently on my laptop I have everything from Tantric to Josh Groban to Eminem to country. I don't listen to just one thing, and I don't understand how pepole can just listen to one kind of music. I'm with the others who have said that you shouldn't generalize. What about the guys who like mainstream music?
I am a girl. I EFFING HATE MAINSTREAM!
I listen to Alternative Rock/ Punk/ Indie/ Screamo/ Metal/Hardcore/ Post-Hardcore/ Emo and such!
I don't follow trends I listen to good music
My favorite bands include The Used, Every Avenue, Anberlin, Taking Back Sunday, Pierce The Veil, Alesana, Aiden, Saosin, Madina Lake, and Breathe Carolina :Dit's all up the person's taste. I don't listen to all mainstream music, like justin beiber, I hate his music. but I also hate metal and techno because it simply hurts my ears to listen to. I know plenty of women who like that sort of music, but I also know plenty of guys who like the 'main stream' music. it's not just girls who like that.
I think people who are thinkers tend to like Indie Music and Classic rock and such, people who live more in their heads, if that makes sense. And People who aren't thinkers, as in think less for fun and more because they have to, consequently not thinking for themselves, listen to whatever is on the radio.
That probably makes very little sense as it is 4 in the morning, but oh well.I like Justin Bieber, but I also like a lot of other kinds of music.
Most girls don't just like the new stuff, they just don't really show that they like a lot of other stuff to.
I listen to new stuff, & old stuff just because that's how I was raised with classic rock & stuff.
Jus sayinn :)
