There are a couple of reasons why some guys like shorter girls.
Depending of the girls build, e. g. petite, it's purely sexual, as in kiddie diddler, or guys who are insecure about the size of their hogs. Tiny hands make everything look bigger.
Another is maybe some paternal instinct / monkey brain part - protect small human.
Maybe it's because they had prior partners that were shorter and this is their thing.
An offshoot of Oidepus complex where mom was short, so girlfriend must be short too.
I always preferred women closer to my height so that we can be at eye level standing up or dancing, not like her hugging my waist and looking up at me.
I'm not the tallest guy though, maybe that's why. I've noticed the tallest guy frequently pair-up with the shortest girls which seems strange to me, but maybe they're so used to seeing the top of women's heads from such a height that they find cuteness in the smallest.

Guys tend to prefer shorter chicks, it's not really about them feeling more masculine, but the girl feeling more feminine. Guys that prefer taller chicks are the same, but it's a different kind of feminine energy.
My ex wife was the same height as me.
