Historically, there was always a shortage of men. Men were regularly maimed or killed doing dangerous jobs, whether that was farming, construction, sailing, mining, hunting, exploring/guiding, or soldiering. It wasn't unusual for there to be 2+ women for every man. This is why ancient cultures normalized plural marriages - women and children had to be taken care of, and they needed a man to survive.
In the Bible, for example, a man was to marry his brother's wife (even if he was already married) if his brother was killed, and was to provide her a son so that she would have a younger man to take care of her in old age. This was a very practical and very common situation, because without a man, the woman and any existing children might easily have died on their own. Other cultures and religions had similar practices for exactly the same reason.
What we think of as "civilization" has only existed since the 1600s in Europe, and really only if you lived in or near a major city. Most people lived rurally, and were largely on their own, so people tended to create loosely organized villages for mutual defense, but there was very little "law" - whoever had the power made the rules, and enforced them, usually with brutal consequences for the ruled. Plus, the good old Earth, and its many creatures, were more than enough of a threat on their own. Plenty of people were killed by animals, whether by horses, bears, snakes, or whatever.
If you don't have a lot of historical knowledge, just watch the Yellowstone prequel "1883", and see how easy it was to die just trying to travel - and this was in much more modern times. There was no government to pay for you - if you couldn't work, or you didn't have children who could work and take care of you, you had to rely on the mercy of the church, or your community (who were also usually just barely getting by), or you died. And lots of people did just that.

If anything, it's the other way around; our selection pressure is WAY higher, and 'lways has been.
To do the work. I remember in high school in our there were about 60 pupils, 40 girls and 20 boys. Including myself about at least 35 of us girls had sex with the boys at school, but only 5 of the boys had sex with us.

Lol what? Because without males there is no fertilizing. Males are super important to the fabric of society. And procreation.
If there were only a few men women would have no bargaining power.
Probably. But if you think you're gonna convince women to share men, I don't know what to tell you
