I have been sleeping with a man for over two years now. He is the most emotionally unavailable man I have ever met. I was getting sort of restless with the situation and we ended things a few days ago. He texts me today and after a little discussion he says he can’t give me more but wants us to continue being friends with benefits and not being with anyone else or actively look to be with anyone else. What is that supposed to mean? If he doesn’t want more then why can’t we both continue looking elsewhere while we still sleep together?

This sounds like him just wanting convenience. You being his go-to booty call who is always available because you’re not seeing or dating anyone else. It doesn’t serve you at all unless you want the exact same thing. Sounds like a one-sides deal.

It means he wants all of you while not giving you any of him. He gets all the benefits without putting in any of the work, and if you dare demand it, he’ll say some variant of “I’m not your boyfriend/we’re not together”.

Now I’m not sure. It seems to me that friends with benefits is a convenience thing that you do until you find someone you want to be with. Asking me to be an exclusive friends with benefits where neither of us sees or sleeps with anyone else seems to be a backwards way of saying let’s be committed without actually having to use the word “relationship.” What is the point of that?

He is not making any sort of commitment, don't lie to yourself. He is saying this to placate you so he can keep getting his free 🥧 pie. Hopefully you don't want anything more because the odds of that happening are slightly greater than zero.
