Why would a guy instantly start liking you because you compliment his kid?

I was at church today. I was having Sunday breakfast after and I sat next to these little girls who are at a elementary school age.

Their father which I'm assuming is divorced, probably in his 40s was talking to his daughters. They looked really cute and I asked him if they are his kids and he said yes. I told him they are cute.

And that did it, he was interested in me after that. Kept looking at me and smiling at me and offered to help with stuff and random acts of kindness.

I was just being nice I wasn't trying to flirt with him and I honestly don't feel comfortable dating a guy with responsibilities like that. I don't understand why he easily got attached like that. Plus I'm way younger than him.

He may have just been being nice. But if he did get interested in you then tbh I’m not surprised. Single parents (more specifically with a few kids) can have a hard time in the dating world. A lot of people see children as baggage and don’t want to get involved. Maybe he’s lonely and hasn’t had a great time finding someone, so the fact you seemed kind and fond of his girls probably made him feel interest. The fact he met you at church is only a bonus. Anyway if you aren’t interested then just be mindful of your actions towards him and maybe he will get the message before verbally having to reject him.

Thank you I appreciate your opinion. I know I'm overreacting in some ways. But there was a legit moment where he offered to throw away some trash for me. I smiled at him and thanked him. And he smiled back and then our eye contact just lingered for longer than necessary. I didn't mean to linger I was just being nice but I could just tell you know? I just had that gut feeling. I'm not trying to be a douche or anything though.

I don’t think you were being a douche, you didn’t do anything misleading or suggestive. The good news is that you don’t know with certainty if he has feelings. This should be one of those cross that bridge when you get to it situations. Otherwise you’d probably stress at the thought of him taking interest.
