Why does he say "we were in a relationship" and we never talk before? What does that mean?

I have a crush on him and I was chasing him then after a year he has a crush on me But we never talk, we were just making eye contact and sometimes he ingores me and give me many mixed signs and when I ingore him he noticed and become sad and say "we were in a relationship" and he really act he is sad and he was really in a relationship! and I see he get sad when I ingore him and he wants to make eye contact with me, BUT in the end no one ever talk to the other!

Ahh i definitely know that feelings and meaning what he was saying

"ACTUALLY you and him both had crush over each other but you both were unable to say to each other coz of rejection and fear. But you both had eye contacts , you both get sad and angry when they ignored you. You both become happy to see each other. You both had somewhat understanding. So it was kinda relationship though you both didn't expressed it.

You may not want to hear this, but you were not in a relationship. Making eye contact, etc., isn't a relationship. If you never talk, if he sometimes ignores you, etc., isn't a relationship.

I guess my point is that he can say that but it doesn't make it true. Why is he saying that? Maybe trying to impress his friends is my guess.
