Would this person ever leave your mind?

So a friend of mine met someone online, they talked for a few years, exchanged pictures, sent voice notes etc.. they had a thing for each other but never spoke it out loud. Towards the end, the guy asked for help financially for something (wasn't a lot maybe 2-3 hundred), and my friend gave him. 2 weeks after the fact she finds out the guy made up a whole life (by his friend and he was very mad), the pictures were fake etc.. she was 24, and he turned out to be 16. She obviously stops talking to him, and she feels burned and scammed. But I've seen their convos, and it seems like they both really liked each other. My question is, can a guy play someone for years just for money? Or did he actually like her? I don't want my friend to think she's stupid because I even believed the guy.

He didn't play her that long just for money from her. It was more like he needed (or wanted) the $$ for something and figured he'd try to scam her, and it worked.

I feel that makes more sense, because the way they talked to each other seemed real. I also don't think he intended her to find out, and when she did he offered to pay her back but she was pissed.

Why would he regret it? Someone who is capable of stealing money certainly isn't going to regret anything.
