He distanced himself after I said I couldn't commit to him right now?

Hello. So I I'm a 31 year old female. I have a friend who I've been chatting to everyday since June. We mutually like each other. And I mean we chatted every single day and he cared about every aspect of my life.

The thing is, last Wednesday he woke up and texted that he feels like I'm just keeping him around for emotional support. I said that's not true I'm just scared to get into a new relationship right now. After a while of talking he wished me well and said his door is always open for me. Now we haven't really chatted at all besides a few texts and comments on Facebook.

So it hurts obviously but now he doesn't even ask about my day or even seem to care about me at all when for months every single day he was so involved and even confessed to loving me. My main question is does it seem like his feelings were never real at all? Or is he just giving himself time to move on since I don't want to commit yet? To me it just seems like that now that he's being so silent he never really cared at all and never truly was a friend since he couldn't get me the way he wants. I'm just trying to understand the mind of a man better.
