I just met a new platonic guy friend from online and he kept asking me about the type of guys I am attracted to. He kept asking "is there a specific race? body type? features?" He was just really into this topic. He even wanted me to show him the type of male celebrity I find attractive. He seemed quite bummed out when I told him he wasn't my type.

Ah man, this dude is totally into you. Like why else would he be grilling you about what kind of guys you like if he wasn't trying to see if he has a chance?
He was probably fishing to see if you'd describe him or a guy like him. And then asking to see celebs you think are hot? Give me a break. He was clearly hoping you'd be into him so he could make a move.
The fact that he got bummed when you said he wasn't your type is a dead giveaway. Guys don't care that much what a "friend" is attracted to. He likes you and wanted you to like him back.
I'd say don't lead this poor dude on if you only see him as a friend. But it's obvious he was trying to gauge how you feel and see if you're open to something more. Just be straight with him so he's not wasting his time pining after you, ya know? That'd be messed up.
