Why would a guy approach a girl he rejected trying to be her friend?

Okay so, I told my friend this guy was cute, and she went and told him what I said. The boy apparently said "he's not looking for a relationship," and to, "let me down easy." Anyways, a few days later the boy started talking to me, we walked down the hall together talking, and he eventually asked me for my social media. I gave him my number, and when we were texting I asked him if he had a girlfriend. He told me, "nah I'm not really looking for a relationship."

He's probably trying not to give off that heartbreaker impression, just cause a guy isn't looking for a relationship doesn't mean he doesn't still instinctually like socializing with women, men talking to women is instinctual in general just how women also have a certain craving for male socialization, even if they aren't seriously looking for a relationship, of course there's always the chances he isn't looking for a relationship but sexual intercourse isn't out oof the picture.

Maybe he feels bad about the rejection. Maybe he genuinely likes her as a person. Maybe he wants to eventually get in her pants. Only he knows.
