Coworker confronted me about feelings?

I currently have feelings for my coworker. For the last few months we have been very close and talk for hours outside of work and have flirty banter. Although I have feelings, I have been very discreet about them and always match his energy and behaviour towards me (never more). Recently, my coworker has been very moody where somedays it seems that he is really into me and other days he is very distant and awkward. Last night out of the blue I get a text where he said that he wants to be clear that we are only coworkers and it seemed like a message that would only be necessary IF I had confessed having feelings (which I did not). I am very confused where this is coming from and he has not responded to my message back. It is clear based on the message he does not even want to be friends anymore just professional at work. Any chance he did have feelings or I am reading too much into the situation? I also have no idea how to proceed with this situation any advice would helpful!

This is very interesting because I'm in somewhat of a similar situation right now with a coworker although neither of us has acknowledged anything (yet).

What I would recommend is to give him the space he needs for now and see how it progresses after a while. Don't outright ignore him and after maybe a week or two try to joke around a bit and see how he reacts.

Other point to consider : are you 100% sure that he doesn't have anyone in his life? A wife or maybe a girlfriend that he might not have mentioned (or lied about)? It could explain the sudden change in behavior... maybe the partner has noticed that he's constantly talking about you, spending more time at work or texting you, etc. and now he's in 'damage control' mode.

All the best with your situation! I am not 100% sure there isn't anyone in his life, he always says there isn't but that could be a lie. I just am so confused if this is an actual "rejection" or some weird way of hiding his feelings.
