Why Do Some Guys Say They Can't Date You Cos You're Too Far But Then Proceed to Keep Talking and Flirting With You?

Why do guys do this? That seems like such a waste of time.

They should just let the other person go if they don't want anything or just keep saying that it can't happen "at the moment" because of x and y.

If I had a nickel for every time I hit it off with a guy but then they'd tell me that they can't date me cos I'm too far or smth (even when I didn't even imply anything about dating them), I'd have 2 nickles. Which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice.

Because they are trying to get the sex without the accountability and responsibility a relationship would bring with it. This is little more than high-grade manipulation. Apparently quite skillfully because they have succeeded in you calling it a “situationship” (quite literally one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of) and believing you have some special place to them. It’s the ultimate player move.
