Firstly, I suggest a professional, but there is a way to get out on your own. I was depressed for a little while, and now that I'm out I feel great. I know what it's like. You can't help it. I don't know how exactly I got out, but one day I just woke up and was excited. now I want people to feel the same and know that they are special. I started by finding things to occupy myself so I don't think about it. For example, I'm in love with art and music, so I did that a lot, and still do. Video games, anything healthy that's not drugs or something that can hurt you. Just remember that life can only get better. Do something fun. Write a list of all the things you love about yourself and your life and life in general, paint your nails with really cool patterns like polka dots, (I suggest using something like a toothpick or bobbypin works well), hang out with good people who will support you, dye your hair a fun color like purple, buy a pet to keep you company, redecorate your room, draw, make music, learn how to play your favorite song on an instrument you know, take a walk in the country, etc . If you have any suicidal thoughts you MUST consult a professional. Just remember that there are people who love you, and life is too precious to throw away. Depression is really something you should seek a professional for. Good luck, and it will get better, I promise.

There are several ways. The most effective is probably finding a hobby and getting into that, it really really helps (painting, dancing, yoga, singing, sewing etc.). The next would probably be talking. You dont have to talk about 'it', but not isolating yourself is a major positive. And its the hardest thing to do, but when you achieve it, you won't want to go back (join volunteer programs, hospitals, animal shelters etc.) It helps if you are mingling with people away from your usual crowd, so as to avoid any mentions of your problems. Volunteering to help is an excellent guide because it makes you feel better about yourself, it keeps your mind occupied, plus you're making a difference. Other than that, therapy is something I think is a MUST. Writing is also very effective, especially if you're writing a diary.
Whichever way you choose, you will get through it. Happy Valentine's Day :)
Distract your mind. Don't let the source of your depression linger in your thoughts.
Eventually, over time you'll feel better.
If it's severe, look into medication or counseling.
