I bite my nails and now my thumb won't stop hurting?

Yes I know biting nails is a terrible habit and I bleed a lot from it and it causes lots of pain. But, the pain in my thumb won't seem to go away. And it is immense throbbing pain. It's very sensitive as well and I haven't even bitten at that nail for days. Could this be something serious?

Some important questions before I "diagnose" (or make my best reasonable guess)--

1.) How long has it been hurting?
2.) What does it look like (or rather, is it a cut? is it a scab? is it swollen and/or red? etc.)
3.) Does it have signs of puss or ooze from it?

Nail biting is actually really bad for you because bacteria thrives under nails and transferring bacteria in mouth to under nails is essentially giving all the bacteria free homes. Infections, like Paronychia, can be pretty common with nail biters due to the nature of it.

To answer your question though, it could very well be an infection at worst. At best it is just a cut from biting that will go away.
In any case, it would be a good idea to go to a ready clinic or doctor if you feel worried about it. If it is an infection, it is important to get it treated before it gets worse. Infections are serious business and can lead to a mess of complications.

You likely have an ingrown nail with an infection. You really need to see a doctor about it because it could turn into something serious if not properly treated. And you need to discuss any anxiety issues with someone which are causing you to do this. Voice of experience speaking here. :-(

Maybe your nail has been nibbled down so much that the skin is broken near the edge of the nail. Over time your nail will grow back and cover the exposed broken skin.

If its red, throbbing, or feels like its on fire I'd put some polysporin on it and watch it for a couple days. If it's still inflamed and/or has green puss coming from the nailbed then its definitely infected.
