Do people add people they just see at the gym on facebook?

I have a few people I don't recognise that look like there into finess send me friend requests on facebook.
This is after joining a local gym fairly recently. I'm not even sure how they knew my name I don't remember speaking to any of them and you don't really use each others names much if at all when you talk to someone or at least I don't.

I've had people send me friend requests from my gym. I think it's because I'm friends with someone a lot of people know and maybe they've seen my profile through suggested friends. I love making new friends especially at the gym. But if you're not comfortable with it you do not have to accept them. But it seems harmless to me :)

They might have the gym linked to their facebook and you are popping up as a "suggested" friend request. Some people seem to think the more "friends" they have on facebook, the more worthy as a person they are, so they add as many as possible.

Then if you don't know them how would they know your facebook screen name? I get random friends request from people I dont know
