Why are people so weird about nudity?

I notice all the time that people stare at me while I'm in the locker room and sauna at the gym. Yeah I strip down completely for the sauna, shower, and even get completely naked when changing clothes.

Are women really that insecure? Are they curious? Are they freaked out?

Of COURSE we are insecure! We are also a little curious, and yeah probably just a little freaked out too! We’ve been conditioned to fear nudity (and to some degree, our own bodies). The fact that you are so secure is a credit to both you, and the parents who raised you! My parents are extremely conservative “churchy-types”. And I was taught to never show my nakedness to anyone except my “husband on out wedding night” but a friend sunbathed nude in her secluded back yard, and I gave it a try... I LOVED it, and no more string “tan tattoos” around my neck. I wanted to do it at MY home, but the parental units were a BIG no on that! After I threatened to go to a nude public beach, they did agree to topless (LOL, if I move a partition in front of the sliding glass door, to protect my little brother) which is ridiculous because my brothers bedroom overlooks the backyard anyway! And yes obviously he was curious the first time, but everything is fine now!

I used to be one who hated being naked. Guess I was insecure. But over time I’ve learned that I hate clothes. Now I wear as little as possible when I’m out. Love how you stood your ground and now able to go topless. Eventually you’ll be able to go completely naked. Hope you get what you want!

When I was married my ex would complain about when the gym needed to do maintenance on the sauna they had to swap the men's and womens changing rooms, biggest complaint was in the men's there where not any individual cubicles for changing so all the women would start using the shower cubicles tieing up all the showers. The question she always asked is where do the men get changed?
She could never understand that we would get changed in the open at the bench next to the locker.

So to sum it up nudity for me no problem but my ex has big issues with it.

Most people have body issues. It's very unusual to find someone who doesn't have an issue about at least one part of their body.

I had an issue with my tummy until I found out it was caused by my vertebrae being deformed and pushing everything forwards. Now I don't worry about it. I'm also in a wheelchair now (thanks covid) having lost a leg this year so I control my weight through diet as exercise is more complicated now.

I always avoided nudity around other people I wasn't involved with romantically when I was younger. Also now I'm older I no longer give a crap what other people think.

I've used mixed changing areas without any problem, it’s a body we all have one, they come in various shapes, sizes, colours etc.

It is due to centuries old lesson we are given by society, male dominated, that woman body is a sex object which should be hid from male eyes. Barring a minority, almost every family, especially males, frowned upon their family female members' nudity. It has become a stigma and taboo. Rules were, and still are, framed by patriarch therefore people are so weird about nudity, but love to see non-family women naked. What a joke!

I'm ok with nudity, but I'm also not comfortable with random nudity. I used to have a couple female roommates that moved in with me (friends from high school/who also said in their own words they'd never date me ever) who happened to be the worst roommates I've ever had, messy and gross. Apparently they saw me as invisible because they would walk around the house naked, it was awkward and uncomfortable and I got used to them doing it but not used to how uncomfortable I felt when it happened. It's still makes me uncomfortable when I see random nudity when I'm not expecting it.

In America, even of the sauna is single sex, nudity is usually not okay. In some other countries, nudity is expected, even if it is coed. As for the rest, I believe it is because most women there do not strip naked. OR - They are attracted to women.

I'm not sure of the answer to your question in the context of a women's locker room/shower and sauna. I wouldn't think it would be a big deal because I played sports in school and being naked in the locker room/shower was just a commonplace thing. Maybe some of these women are lesbian or bisexual and are sexually attracted to you because you're a very attractive young woman.

There was one girl who was naked quite often at the gym that I manage and I thought she was kind of weird. But things kinda got turned on their head when I got my first mammogram and she was the technologist. But she explained that handling boobs (and clamping them in a machine) all day desensitized her to female nudity.

Right that women are insecure despite modernization of thoughts and learning. I believe it is curiosity about women body which attracts male gaze and fantasy. I personally don't hate or dislike nudity (I myself stay nude at home with wife) but generally most of the people don't appreciate open nudity.
There is also great difference between male's and female's outlook and concept about nudity. Male love to see nude female body (see great number of female nude paintings by prominent artists vis-a-viz male nude portraits).

I am very comfortable nude, I also get totally undressed at the locker before going to the shower at the sports center/gym.
I would even be comfortable being nude outdoors if it wasn't illegal.
