What are your interests?
Are the sports your interested in available to you, & fit your schedule?
Some people don't like the gym. There's plenty available to suit a wide variety of interests but some people can only go at peak times & find it too crowded for them & can't get on some of the eq. they wanted to use that day.
I think sports & weight lifting go hand & hand. How about both? More variety?
I go to the gym 6 days a week. M-F I lift & then play a couple of games of racquetball. On Saturdays I play anywhere from 3 games to as many as 6 games, then run for a half hour for about 4 miles. I use to only run on Saturdays for an hour about 7 miles but that got so boring that I decided to play racquetball 1st. I figure it's more of a sprint type of exercise & then the running is more for stamina.

As far as health benefit, either one would be excellent. However, like Shaun said, sport groups typically have other people you play with, which helps keep you motivated and coming back regularly.
Also, sports are typically more fun.
Do whatever you'll be able to consistently enjoy.
I, personally, suck at any and all sports so I would never use athletics as a way to stay in shape. I love going to the gym, running on the ellipticals and treadmills and then doing various weight training exercises, squats, lunges, crunches...that's my thing. You have to find what works for you.
(: Congrats on wanting to be healthy and active. It's a great lifestyle choice.
I don't like going to the gym much. Sweaty bodies in a closed room really grosses me out. What I do is run outdoors and play a lot of team sports. But if you're looking to tone a specific part of your body, stick to the gym. The machines there really help build target specific "problem" areas. Do what you like to stay fit.

Personally, I think the gym can get very boring because your in one place...whereas a sport you are with a group of people who are motivating you to do better and provide competition.
depends on whether or no you like working out. If its boring or hard to get in the habit then play sports. You get exercise without knowing it
It's far easier to stay motivated with a sports regimen, much more fun to hang out with and compete against different people.
it depends on your personality. I don't like team sports so I rather go to the gym and work out on the machines or join in the exercising classes
