I went to a wedding this weekend and the brides' friend officiated the ceremony. I wonder about the legality of this.
I said Captain Kirk because WHO WOULDN'T?
Instead I got married by a Catholic priest in a beautiful church in a small family ceremony.
We weren't interested in wasting a bunch of money on a one day event and just donated to the parish I grew up in to use the church. I'm not really a believer, but my family doesn't know that. I've been a quiet atheist since I was 5. My husband is practicingish though.

We had ours officiated by a JP. There are only certain groups of people who can officiate weddings here, and unless your best friend is one of them, they can’t marry you. https://www.ontario.ca/page/getting-married#section-7
It depends. You just need to make sure it's someone who is legally recognized to marry people. That can be a judge, a priest/minister, or even the captain of a ship (if in international waters). If a friend of the family is qualified, that's often a good choice.
Someone who can treat my self-destructive impulse to get married and keep it from happening.

In Florida, anyone who is a notary public can perform a wedding and sign a marriage license. I would expect the law to be similar in most other states.
I will be married next April and my pastor will officiate.
Captain Kirk, because he would be my protector.
Both marriages was done by Justice of Peace.
Perhaps the friend is license?A very nice Justice of the Peace married me. At least, I thought so. I suspect she may have been Satan and set me up for eternal damnation with a succubus. Too bad Mr. Garrison wasn't my teacher...

I won’t be getting married ever because I prefer my own freedom over a lifetime of servitude. But I chose religious leader because my mom wouldn’t have it any other way.
I've never been married neither do I plan on ever getting married so I selected Captain Kirk.
Religious leader, in spite of me not believing in God, I wouldn't want it any other way.
A friend of my wife officiated our wedding. All legal.

Great question. I'm not sure. It would definitely have to be someone respectable, though.
