How did you celebrate your 21st birthday? For those under 21, how would you want to celebrate your 21st birthday?
My boyfriend's 21st birthday is tomorrow, so it prompted me to ask this. He doesn't drink, so he's not celebrating as the typical 21-year-old would, by *legally* getting drinks. He will be purchasing a handgun, and coming over to open gifts and eat homemade dinner and cheesecake lol. Whoo! That's how he will be celebrating :-)
I don't know how I would want to celebrate my 21st birthday, but maybe something small with just my boyfriend, family, and a couple of friends. Might want to go to dinner or have one drink at home. Something small, simple, and sweet.
How did you celebrate your 21st birthday? For those under 21, how would you want to celebrate it?
At home with my uncle, siblings, mother and first cousin who was 10 months old at the time. We just got a cake and had a very small intimate birthday. I had gone to the church to get a blessing earlier in the day and popped into a makeup compartment on Victoria St London and got wished by the assistant and had a brief conversation. When I got home my mother was like “she still looks 11” and everyone forcefully hugged me (I hate hugs). I’m not a huge party person. I didn’t do anything for my 16th or 18th. I might have a small, clean and sober celebration for my 30th to make up for missed milestones. Like just an occasion to dress up and have a nice evening with close friends and family + a photoshoot for myself.
When I was 17 I could get in to bars and clubs. Every night after work we would go into this one bar and have a couple beers and go home on my 21st birthday everybody was telling the owner Joe that it was my birthday so he told me to come up to the bar and get some beers for everybody sitting at the table and when I walked into the bar he goes so how old are you and I go 21 and he said what I said yeah I just turned 21 LOL do you know you've been coming in here for four or five years I it said no it's only been maybe a year or something he said over four or five years yeah that would give you a beer now he starts laughing you're lucky you didn't get caught then he said we never did check your i d I said nope He asked how old is everybody at the table I said they were all year older than me shook his head into that would be $1,000 for all these beers and years you put me through so I had a couple beers there and then went out later on that night to a club
It was a long time ago. I had to drop out of college because I lost my ROTC scholarship because I could not pass an eye test. I had to move back in with my mother and I transferred to a nearby school and commuted. My girlfriend lived 1500 miles away. I hated the school and I hated living with my mother. I remember that my father gave me 50 bucks for my birthday. I went to a local bar/restaurant by myself and just drank by myself and after a few hours when I was really drunk I got in my car and drove home and went to bed. I was really depressed about how shitty my life had turned out.
Maaan I didn't wanted to celebrate my 21st, we did go out eat something with friends tho
But I guess you're more asking cause of legal drinking... uhm here beer is allowed with 16 (can't remember that) and 18 for heavier alcoholic drinks and on my 18st I also sat in my room crying sooo yeah lmao I did go out for a drink with a friend a few days afterwards tho and that was nice
it is legal to drink alcohol here at 18, but I'm planning to stay away from it forever. I have an addictive personality, so I do not want to get addicted to it!
I have not turned 21 yet, but I will be turning 18 in November (yay!). Turning 21 is not a big deal where I live as it is in the U. S., but turning 18 is.
I'd probably go out for dinner with family and friends, distribute homecooked meals to charity. I do that every year.
My 21st was during lockdown but some restrictions were lifted, so my boyfriend and I went out for a meal & drinks and he booked a tiny home for the night which we went out to afterwards, it was lovely!
But I guess 21st birthdays are a bit different in the UK/USA, since by that point we’ve already been legally allowed to drink for 3 years. For my 18th I went out drinking with friends
That sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate! I’m pretty sure my husband and I both celebrated a little rowdy and it really wasn’t that memorable. When you get your turn at hitting 21, I think your plan sounds pretty nice. One little suggestion might be try a little smidge of alcohol from all the different families if you will. There is amazing beer being served everywhere, but don’t forget some high-quality spirits and maybe some wine.
I think what made drinking so much fun was the gamble of getting into a bar or club, without I. D., and seeing if you looked and acted old enough to pass for 21. I also had several friends older than myself who went and bought beer for us when we wanted to party etc. So really by the time my 21st birthday came around, it lost its luster and was quite boring (I hate to say haha). So I guess it’s what you make of it or expect of it.

I would probably celebrate my 21st birthday with family and friends, probably something small like usual ☺️ I don’t know if I would drink anything at that point lol.
The 21st birthday isn't anything special where I'm from. There is no "legal drinking age" and people can go to bars from 18 years old. + I don't drink and I never will aaaaaand I don't really care for my birthday, since I don't like the attention... wow I'm really sad, huh? xD
I had been pressed for (then: obligatory) ''military service'' by the government that (then) owned me. I saw my 21st b'day a week after I saw myself tucked away in some ugly barracks; together with people whom I didn't know (and did not really WANT to know). I celebrated with myself :)
I had a steak, smoked a Romeo y Julietta no3 and poured myself a double of the best whisky I've tried so far at least* in the form of the rum cask finished 21 year old Glenfiddich
* I've got the 26 year old Age of Excellence but that is for my 26th birthday
I think that was the summer I spent at my grandmother's house in Poland. I literally just had pizza and cake. I didn't make a big deal about it, because I visited my dad's side of the family two year's prior, and they threw me an awesome party for my 19th, so it's all good
I’m celebrating mine in a few months time. Going to have a games night with my closest friends and my partner, play card games & board games while drinking. I’m introverted so don’t want to leave the house to celebrate.
We went to Aalborg in Denmark and also to Hamburg in Germany.
We apparently went to Copenhagen but can’t remember.
it was for 3 of us with birthdays that month, bit of a lads week or two weeks away.

Cripe!! That was 56 years ago! I was in the middle of dating my future wife, diving for jumpers off the New London, Ct. bridge, and rescue swimmer on Long Island Sound and the North Atlantic. Yes, ON my birthday.
I was working at Cedar Point, that summer (I just started 11 days before) and my parents and my sister and her future hubby all drove out (at least a 4 hour drive) to spend the day with me. I requested the day off.
I didn't celebrate it. I stopped celebrating my birthday when I graduated high school. If anything, I bake my own cake or buy it and just watch movies or something. It's just another day passing.
My dad took me, mom and few of my close friends to italy. It was a really fun time. We aren't rich or anything and just a fun time and got to see the world a bit.
Around the time of my 21st (1981) money was tight so I had no 21st birthday celebration, accept how your boyfriend is celebrating his birthday and be happy for him, not every guy wants to be legless on their 21st.
I was married the first time shortly after my 21st bay. But back in my day our state was 18 for drinking, and by the time it was 21 I was well past that age.
I celebrated mine with a cake and ice cream with the family and my mom posted something in a local newspaper column called "Coffee Talk" announcing my 21st Birthday it was great!
Mine (the actual day) wasn’t all that exciting. It was mid-week in college, most of my friends had projects due and my girlfriend lived about 45mins away and had to work. So my roommate and I went out and had a few beers.
When I first turned 21 I went to my first bar. I thought that would be cool, but I didn't do anything that I never done before except for drink alcoholic beverages. I didn't proceed after that because I had family members that we're alcoholics.
I lived with my boyfriend at the time, and we did something similar. It was super nice and chill

i honestly don't remember but it occurs during the summer and i went to a lot of bars then so likely went to a local bar and maybe with people i knew at the time
Lockdown 🙂. I was home, upset about a few things that had happened earlier. It was probably the worst time of my life so the bday wasn't that much fun either.
I wanted to go to Vegas when I turned 21 but I guess the only way I’ll ever go is if I go by myself. What I did was go to Dave and Busters then I went to a club. It wasn’t the best birthday
