I have never cheated on a partner but I have been the victim of a cheater. I have strong opinions about cheating and I want to understand why people do it. I want to know the real reasons, not the excuses you gave your partner when you were caught. Respond anonymously - I don't care - but please give us your sincere perspective. Why did you do it? Before you cheated, did you think about the consequences if you were caught? Did you think you would never be discovered? Did you feel guilty afterwards?

I cheated on my boyfriend when I was in my early 20's. I did it because I didn't like my relationship and thought the other guy was hot. I didn't think it would be a big deal nor did I think I would be caught. I wasn't in a good place at that point in my life so I didn't feel about the act when it happened, but did feel bad when I realized I had been caught. It was awful. To see pain that I caused because I didn't have the guts to end a bad relationship before seeking someone else.
I have also been cheated on and that was worse than being on the other side.
After the incident when I was young, I committed to myself to never do that to another human. It wasn't worth it.

As with most questions I ask, I do not need the answers to guide me in my personal life. In my 53 years of dating, relationships, and marriage, I have never once been unfaithful, and I don't need assistance to stay on that path. I am proud of myself for being a faithful partner.

However, I frequently give advice on this site and it might be helpful for me to hear from others with an explanation of why they were unfaithful, because I really don't understand the thought process of anyone who gets into, or stays in, a monogamous relationship or a marriage if they don't intend to remain faithful.
