I think my boyfriend has commitment issues. What do I do?

Anonymous

We've been dating for 2 1/2 years. Lately other people have been making comments about marriage. His friend's fiance asked if he was going to propose. We were helping my brother and his girlfriend move, and he made a comment like, "We're not married yet." Most recently, we were at a local music festival and a guy running a stand asked if I was his wife, and he responded with, "Not yet." When we walked away, I said, "Not yet, huh?" To which he gave me a vague answer about how his mom thinks marriage is just a piece of paper. But that doesn't tell me what he thinks. Whenever I bring up his response to these questions it's always a vague, noncommittal answer.

In regards to moving in together, I'd like to own a home. I'd been saving for years before we started dating. But his idea of starting a life together is renting a house the two of us,, with a friend or two of his, but I've told him how uncomfortable that makes me, so that hasn't come up again. But he never wants to actually commit to sitting down and looking for a place together. It's always just talk and it feels like I'm the only one following through. I don't want to just date for the rest of my life. I want to build a life with someone. But it feels like building a life isn't a top priority for him.
