Do you believe its normal for my boyfriend to say this?

So , my boyfriend and I had a HUGE fight today that may even be the beginning of an end of our relationship.

So, in short, he told me he never hangs out with female friends because he believes men and women can't be just friends. And that eventually , either one of them would probably fall in love.

So I asked him, you always say you love me, but you are not denying the possibility that you may like another girl if you hung out with her?

And, he didn't deny it. The man I love, told me he has to refrain from ever hanging out with females, because there is a possibility that he will, unconsciously, start catching feelings for them.

Needless to say, I'm heartbroken. This just doesn't sit right to me. I don't know what to do and should we break up?

This messed me up so much, I even got the fever and cannot get up from my bed at all. Please, help me understand. Is there any point in continuing?

Sadly, a lot of guys truly believe that.

Most of them didn't grow up with good female friends and can't comprehend women existing as equal beings whose value is not determined by the extent of his attraction to her.

In his own way, he is right in acknowledging the difficulty of being friends with someone who IS overtly attractive (this affects all genders). I too have found it difficult to be just friends with someone attractive (or I already had a crush on). But obviously, to over generalize or to exclude an entire gender for friendship IS a bit close-minded, considering women are half the world's population.

I think breaking up over the syntax of 'I can't be friends with women' is silly, but usually these arguments expose themselves over larger issues like equality, open communication, and maintaining a shared group of friends. So if you're arguing over this, you're probably going to argue about those deeper things later, so best to cut your losses if you can't see each others side about it.

Even in a healthy committed relationship, you can’t deny attraction to other people. It’s normal and human instinct.

I think you need to calm down
