Should I give him this small gift?

Me and the guy I like go play tennis every week and I noticed the grip of his racquet is very worn out. When I pointed it out to him he said he’s too lazy to change it, so I was thinking of getting him a new one and give it to him as a small gift next time. It would be about 10$ so no big deal.

Do you think it would be appreciated or is it awkward/cringe?
